Main duties of the job

Designated Deputy for Head of Nutrition & Dietetics supporting all areas of service leadership and management, including representation at local and National forums

The post holder provides focused strategic direction to the operational delivery and development of the service in areas of responsibility, managing risk, performance and ensuring compliance with professional standards

The post-holder maintains clinical expertise in a specialty area and provides clinical supervision, mentoring, complex case management oversight, leading service development, innovation and delivery against agreed priorities and strategic direction

Responsible for the operational and professional leadership of delegated nutrition & Dietetic services to include registered and non-registered staff across specialties, holding responsibility for defined projects

Acts as a delegated accountable senior manager for the service and represents Nutrition & Dietetic Services across a range of senior forums, collaborating with staff across services, agencies, develops and presents proposals and reports on behalf of the service

Employs effective communication and negotiation skills in development of operational service plans within area of responsibility

Leads on development of care pathways, local clinical guidelines and protocols informed by evidence

 

 

Working for our organisation

Hywel Dda University Health Board is the planner and provider of NHS healthcare services for people in Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Pembrokeshire and its bordering counties. Our 12,000 members of staff provide primary, community, in-hospital, mental health and learning disabilities services for around 384,000 people across a quarter of the landmass of Wales. We do this in partnership with our three local authorities and public, private and third sector colleagues, including our volunteers, through:

Four main hospitals: Bronglais General in Aberystwyth, Glangwili General in Carmarthen, Prince Philip in Llanelli and Withybush General in Haverfordwest;

Seven community hospitals: Amman Valley and Llandovery in Carmarthenshire; Tregaron, Aberaeron and Cardigan in Ceredigion; and Tenby and South Pembrokeshire Hospital Health and Social Care Resource Centre in Pembrokeshire;

48 general practices (six of which are managed practices), 47 dental practices (including three orthodontic), 99 community pharmacies, 44 general ophthalmic practices (43 providing Eye Health Examination Wales and 34 low vision services) and 17 domiciliary only providers and 11 health centres;

Numerous locations providing mental health and learning disabilities services;

Highly specialised and tertiary services commissioned by the Welsh Health Specialised Services Committee, a joint committee representing seven health boards across Wales.

Qualifications and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Professional qualification in Nutrition and Dietetics as evidenced by degree qualification or equivalent Masters level education in relevant clinical, leadership or management subject
  • HCPC registered Dietitian
  • Advanced knowledge & expertise in dietetic practice and relevant clinical specialties
  • Advanced clinical supervisor training / knowledge
  • Comprehensive continual professional development portfolio relating to clinical leadership
  • Knowledge of current national and local strategy, policy and legislation and its application to Nutrition and Dietetics
  • Knowledge and understanding of clinical governance frameworks
  • Knowledge of organisational structures
  • Knowledge of Organisational Strategy and application to service planning and delivery
Desirable criteria
  • Recognised management/ leadership training and/or qualification
  • Post graduate qualification related to designated specialist clinical area
  • Recognised clinical expert in specialist area
  • Active participation/ member of specialist interest group

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant and broad post graduate dietetic experience
  • Undertaken team and/or clinical leadership role or function
  • Significant experience of line management including performance management
  • Extensive multi-professional working
  • Experience of leading service improvement /development work and / or change management using recognised methodology
  • Managing highly complex information and report writing
  • Operationalising strategic plans
  • Evidence of leading clinical audit and / or research
  • Experience of representing the service / profession in a range of arenas including nationally
  • Capacity & demand to inform planning
Desirable criteria
  • SLA / Contract monitoring
  • Silver IQT or equivalent quality improvement training
  • Working across agencies including statutory, third, voluntary and private sectors
