Job overview
An exciting and unique opportunity has arisen to be a part of the Mental Health Intensive Support Service, as an Occupational Therapy Technical Instructor based in Chester.
This service provides specialist assessment, treatment, interventions & support, to help people recover from complex mental health problems & to regain the skills & confidence to live successfully in the community.
Main duties of the job
As a Occupational Therapy Technical Instructor you will be expected to support the MDT in providing intensive support to a small cohort of patients, providing high quality levels of care in order to assist these patients to live fulfilled and independent lives.
You will be working alongside the Key Worker and Senior Occupational Therapist to ensure effective and adaptive patient care with a strong focus on recovery, identifying relapse indicators and promoting independence. You will also be responsible for ensuring all patients engage in the agreed care plan and assist in encouraging inclusion in local community services, to promote daily living skills.
Building rapport and an effective therapeutic relationship with patients is pertinent to contribute, plan and monitor interventions and treatments, under the supervision of the MDT.

Person specification
Qualifications
Essential criteria
- NVQ Level III or equivalent in relevant subject area
- Food Hygiene training or be willing to gain within 3 months of appointment.
- COSHH training or be willing to gain within 6 months of appointment.
- First Aid training or be willing to gain within 6 months of appointment
Desirable criteria
- Higher level education qualifications.
Knowledge and Expertise
Essential criteria
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- High level of co-ordination and organisational skills.
- Basic risk assessment and risk management skills.
- Ability to work autonomously and collaboratively.
- Computer literacy.
- Basic understanding of issues affecting people with a Mental Illness or a Learning Disability in a rehabilitation environment.
- Basic awareness of issues affecting health & social care.
Desirable criteria
- Knowledge of Occupational Therapy models of practice or other therapies.
- Skills and interest in using a variety of activities and interventions relevant to the post including psychoeducation, creative activities, domestic skills, horticulture, exercise.
Experience
Essential criteria
- At least three years’ experience in a health care setting
- Experience of organising and leading individual or group therapeutic activities
- Experience of working with individuals with Learning Disabilities and/or Mental Health conditions
Desirable criteria
- Experience of rehabilitation in the field of adult mental health
- Experience of working in the community
- Experience of delivering adult education or psychoeducation
- Experience in an Occupational Therapy team
