We are looking for applicants to join an expanding team of Acute Medicine Consultants who are interested in progressing our journey of service development and innovative working within Acute Medicine.
Acute Medicine works closely with the Emergency Medicine Team and all Medical Specialities, and you will be involved in the development of clinical processes to improve patient outcomes and experience.
The successful applicant, along with the other Acute Medicine Consultants, will be responsible for the care of patients on our Acute Medicine Unit and Acute Medicine Assessment Centre (Assessment and SDEC/Ambulatory care). You will be supported by a full multi-disciplinary team, which includes a Junior Medical Team and Advanced Nurse Practitioners.
The Trust has a strong Medical Education department, and the post holder would have a significant educational role, particularly in educational supervision of our IMT doctors and students.
Applicants should be able to demonstrate extensive experience in Acute Medicine, and we would entertain applicants seeking to work in Acute Medicine and another specialty.

Main duties of the job
- Leading ward rounds on the AMU, supporting junior doctors and the multidisciplinary team.
- Post taking patients within ED and SDEC
- Supervision of patients returning to SDEC (ambulatory clinic)
- Acute Medicine outpatients
- Educational and clinical supervision of junior doctors
- Attendance and input into departmental and medical meetings
Working for our organisation
The Trust’s services are provided from three locations:
• The Countess of Chester Hospital: providing 473 general and acute beds.
• Ellesmere Port Hospital: providing 60 beds as a rehabilitation, intermediate and outpatient facility.
• Tarporley War Memorial Hospital: a base for community services which serve the local rural population.
The Countess of Chester Hospital NHS Foundation Trust employs 5,964 staff (headcount) to provide care and treatment to a population of over 400,000 people living in Chester and West Cheshire which includes Ellesmere Port and Neston as well as the Deeside area of Flintshire.
The Trust works collaboratively within the wider Cheshire and Merseyside Integrated Care System. Due to its location on the border with North Wales, the Trust also works closely with the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board.

Person specification
Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Registered with the GMC with a licence to Practice
- MRCP (or equivalent) and active ALS
Desirable criteria
- CCT in Acute Medicine or General Medicine (or expected within 6 months of interview) or alternative route to specialist register (e.g. CESR)
- Registered on the GMC Specialist Register
- An appropriate higher degree (eg an MD, PhD or equivalent)
Experience and Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Experience of working in acute medicine
- Evidence of teaching
- Relevant experience in undertaking and organization of an audit or quality improvement projectt
- Knowledge of appropriate clinical guidelines to acute medicine
- Understand importance of management skills
- Ability to integrate, motivate and provide professional lead in multidisciplinary team
- Excellent communication skills
Desirable criteria
- Registrar level experience in Cardiology, Respiratory, Care of the Elderly and Intensive Care Medicine
- Experience of ambulatory emergency care
- Recognised Teaching Skill Course or Qualification
- Research and publications relevant to acute medicine
- Undertaken any relevant management courses or qualifications
