An exciting opportunity has arisen within the ENT Department at the Countess of Chester Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, welcoming applications at Trust Doctor ST1/ST2 level to join our well established ENT team

Applicants must hold MB BS or equivalent and must have experience to the level of ST1 competence or equivalent in ENT, with previous experience in Ear, Nose and Throat and experience in an NHS setting. The successful candidate will be expected to participate in a 1 in 8 joint on-call rota between ENT and Plastic Surgery.

Applicants must hold full registration with the GMC with a licence to practice.

This post is not recognised for training purposes; however the Trust will ensure teaching to a high standard to assist the successful applicant in progressing further.

Main duties of the job

This exciting post will offer candidates a unique opportunity to consolidate their experience in a busy and supportive NHS Foundation Trust and provide a stepping-stone to the next level of clinical experience. The successful candidate will have educational teaching, learning and assessment equivalent to those on national speciality programmes. 

The ENT team comprises three full-time Consultant posts, one SpR/ST3+ trainee (who rotate every six months) and one Trust SpR, three Trust Grade SAS and four ST1/2 posts.

The department of Ear, Nose and Throat Surgery provides a comprehensive service to a population of approximately 250,000. The specialty is part of the Planned Care Division. The department provides a wide range of services including Otology, Neck Lump and Thyroid service and General ENT treatment. The department has been renowned in the region with respect to any complex major middle ear intervention and is a regional referral centre for Bone Anchored Hearing Aid.

Working for our organisation

The Countess of Chester Hospital NHS Foundation Trust provides services to West Cheshire and to Welsh patients covered by Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board. The Trust works collaboratively within the wider Cheshire and Merseyside Health and Care Partnership. Its services are provided from three locations:

•    The Countess of Chester Hospital: providing 438 general and acute beds.
•    Ellesmere Port Hospital: providing 56 beds as a rehabilitation, intermediate and outpatient facility.
•    Tarporley War Memorial Hospital: a base for community services which serve the local rural population.

The Trust employs over 5916 staff (headcount) which includes temporary bank staff and provides acute emergency and elective services, primary care direct access services and obstetric services to a population of approximately 411,000. This includes 361,000 residents in Chester and West Cheshire which includes Ellesmere Port and Neston as well as the Deeside area of Flintshire which has a population of approximately 50,000.

Essential criteria
  • MB BS (or equivalent)
  • Evidence of career progression towards a higher degree.
  • Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment and hold a current licence to practice.

Clinical Experience and Effectiveness

Essential criteria
  • Minimum 3 months experience in Ear, Nose and Throat
  • Experience working in an NHS setting
  • Either - Evidence of current employment in a UKFPO affiliated Foundation Programme
  • OR - 12 months experience after full GMC registration or equivalent and evidence of achievement of Foundation competences from a UKFPO affiliated Foundation Programme or equivalent in line with GMC standards/Good Medical Practice including: o Make the care or your patient your first concern o Protect and promote the health of patients and of the public o Provide a good standard of practice and care o Treat patients as individuals and respect their dignity o Work in partnership with patients o Be honest and open and act with integrity Eligibility to work in the UK. Not previously relinquished, released or removed from a Core Surgical training programme except under exceptional circumstances.
  • Fitness to Practise is up to date and fit to practise safely.

Essential criteria
  • All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues demonstrated by one of the following: o that applicants have undertaken undergraduate medical training in English; or o have achieved the following scores in the academic lnternational English Language Testing System (IELTS) in a single sitting within 24 months at time of application – Overall 7, Speaking 7, Listening 7, Reading 7, Writing 7. If applicants believe they have adequate communication skills but do not fit into one of these examples they must provide supporting evidence.
