Job overview
We invite applications from dynamic and enthusiastic anaesthetists, to join our friendly and forward-thinking team based at Leighton Hospital, Crewe. This is a fantastic opportunity to join a friendly, dynamic team focused on providing high quality patient care for a diverse range of patients.
The successful candidate will be based at Leighton Hospital in the leafy Cheshire countryside near Crewe and Nantwich- a beautiful Cheshire market town.
Within thirty minutes of the hospital are innumerable pretty towns and villages to reside in, plus beautiful walking and cycling routes at your door. There are also a great number of schools in the surrounding area with high Ofsted ratings in both the Independent and State Sectors.
The successful applicant must have full registration with the GMC and continue to hold a Licence to Practise. The applicant must also be on the Specialist Register or be within six months of obtaining their Certificate of Completion of Training at the date of interview.
Shortlisted candidates will be expected to visit the department prior to interview.
The proposed AAC date is 23.02.2026.
Main duties of the job
Duties will include anaesthesia for elective and emergency cases.
There are a variety of surgical lists available, and the post will include paediatric theatre sessions, obstetric sessions and emergency or trauma sessions. Paediatric sessions may be in ENT, dental, ophthalmology, urology or general surgery.
This post includes participation on the general on-call rota and provision of weekend trauma lists (3 trauma weekends per year).
The post is offered at 10 Programmed Activities (PA); 8 PA for Direct Clinical Care sessions and 2 PA for Supporting Professional Activity (SPA), with opportunities to contribute to all aspects of the department’s activities, and those of the wider Trust.
A Trust-wide mentoring programme is in place to provide newly appointed Consultants with a confidential source of knowledge, advice and support to help them find their way in the Trust and settle into their new role.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Full registration with the GMC with a Licence to Practise
- Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via: CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months if interview) or CESR
- Substantial and relevant experience in anaesthesia
- At least one year’s experience of working in the NHS
Desirable criteria
- Additional degree or post-graduate qualification (MRCP, MD etc.)
- ATLS (or equivalent)
clinical skills and training
Essential criteria
- Completion of training leading to UK CCT in Anaesthesia, or equivalent
- Significant experience of providing anaesthesia for high risk patients
- APLS & ALS (or equivalents)
Desirable criteria
- ATLS (or equivalent)
- Relevant medical experience outside anaesthesia
- 6 months training in paediatric anaesthesia (with a minimum of 3 months at a tertiary centre)
teaching expereince
Essential criteria
- Evidence to allow accreditation as a Consultant Clinical Supervisor for trainee doctors with the GMC
- Active regular participation in teaching and training of medical and para-medical colleagues
- Regular commitment to continuing medical education
Desirable criteria
- Evidence to allow accreditation as a Consultant Educational Supervisor for trainee doctors with the GMC
- Extensive / formal experience in medical education including regional teaching.
