Job overview

Applications are invited for Specialty Doctor in Ophthalmology. The successful candidate will be predominantly based at Leighton with some travel involved to Victoria Infirmary at Northwich. 

Mid Cheshire Hospitals Trust has been allocated £18.2 million of funding from NHS England via NHS Cheshire and Merseyside to build the surgical centre at the Victoria Infirmary, Northwich site.

This new centre will bring together state-of-the-art clinical facilities focussing on ophthalmology and other surgical services, including operating theatres as well as recovery areas and consulting rooms. The new Cheshire and Merseyside Surgical Centre at Victoria Infirmary Northwich has an ambition to be a cataract centre of excellence, providing eye care for people in Cheshire, meaning that there will be fewer people waiting for eye surgery across the region as well as greatly improving patient experience.

The successful applicant must have full registration with the GMC and continue to hold a Licence to Practise.  

 

Main duties of the job

Working within a multidiscipline team in the Ophthalmology department the successful candidate will provide outpatient clinics for patients with AMD, along with Laser clinics and cataract theatre lists. The successful candidate will participate in a 1 in 10 non resident on call rota.

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification

  • Higher degree (PhD, MD or equivalent)

Fitness to Practise

  • Full GMC Registration with a Licence to Practise

Eligibility

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of achievement of ST1 & ST2 competences (or equivalent) in a relevant specialty
  • Evidence of achievement of Foundation competencies (or equivalent) by time of appointment in line with GMC standards in Good Medical Practice including: good clinical care, maintaining good medical practice , good relationships and communication with patients, good working relationships with colleagues , good teaching and training , professional behaviour and probity , delivery of good acute clinical care

Clinical Skills & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Acute care safe: up-to-date BLS. Out of hours experience relevant to the job.
  • Clinical judgement: experience in making clinical decisions and managing risk. Knows when to seek help, able to prioritise clinical need.
  • Relevant specialty clinical knowledge and skills: capacity to apply sound clinical knowledge and skills relevant to the job, specialty knowledge exam.
  • Practical skills: shows aptitude for practical skills, required in the job. With relevant experience in AMD and able to assess cataract patients pre- and post-operatively.
  • Proven ability to work effectively in different clinical settings required in the job.
Desirable criteria
  • Post graduate training in Ophthalmology +/- subspecialty areas.
