Senior Pharmacist - Cancer Services
8a
Job overview
The Cancer Services Pharmacist is a senior clinical role within the Trust’s pharmacy service, based at Leighton Hospital. The post holder will provide advanced specialist input to oncology and surgical pharmacy services, with a strong focus on cancer care pathways, including chemotherapy, systemic anti-cancer treatments (SACT) and supportive care.
Building on specialist oncology pharmacy practice, the post holder will support the delivery of safe, effective and evidence-based medicines management across inpatient and outpatient settings. This includes advanced clinical decision-making, prescribing support and optimisation of complex treatment regimens, with the opportunity to undertake and utilise independent prescribing within scope of practice. The role also contributes to the development of treatment protocols and electronic prescribing systems.
This post is offered at 20.5 hours per week. This role is offered as fixed-term maternity leave cover, anticipated to commence in October 2026.
We are committed to an inclusive pharmacy workforce that reflects the diverse communities we serve, creating a compassionate and respectful environment where all staff feel valued and supported.
Working closely with consultants, cancer nurses and multidisciplinary teams, the post holder will support high-quality, patient-centred oncology care, contributing to governance, education, research and medicines optimisation, supporting service delivery within the division.
Main duties of the job
The Pharmacist will support the delivery of clinical pharmacy and medicines management services to oncology and haematology patients. The post holder will contribute to safe and effective use of medicines across cancer pathways, including clinical screening and verification of chemotherapy, prescribing support, and implementation of evidence-based and national guidance at a local level.
Working as a specialist oncology pharmacist, the post holder will provide direct patient care through participation in consultant ward rounds, oncology clinics and multidisciplinary team meetings. Responsibilities include clinical assessment of prescriptions against treatment protocols, validation of systemic anti-cancer therapies and supporting the development and maintenance of chemotherapy regimens, policies and electronic prescribing systems.
The post holder will contribute to the education and training of pharmacy, medical and nursing staff, and support the development of non-medical prescribing within the service, while maintaining high standards of professional practice.
Governance responsibilities include participation in audit, research and drug utilisation review programmes, as well as contributing to pharmacy involvement in oncology clinical trials, risk management and incident reporting processes.
