An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Physiotherapy Degree Apprenticeship opportunity within the REACT team at Leighton Hospital. We have been successful in securing a place on the next cohort at the university of Salford which is due to start in September 2026.

Consideration will be given to prgression for band 3 progression to band 4.

Main duties of the job

This role will support the development of a therapy assistant to becoming a qualified Physiotherapist through the apprenticeship route. Day to Day you will contribute to assessments, provide therapy interventions, patient advice and support under the guidance of a qualified therapist. Additionally, you will contribute to operational delivery and service planning and development, as well as contribute to multidisciplinary team management across A&E and the assessment and short stay wards to prevent or facilitate early discharge as part of a seven day service.

The Physiotherapy degree apprenticeship involves the development of apprentices through ‘on the job’ training in the workplace, ‘off the job’ training in a university setting, and clinical placements.

· You will be required to demonstrate confident and high-level clinical decision making in a fast-paced environment, In a timely manner.

· You will need to have experience of working within an acute hospital setting and have a strong understanding of the therapy assistant role across clinical areas.

· An understanding of discharge pathways and community services is essential together with a basic understanding of SAFER principles and Discharge to Assess model.

· You will need good organization skills, excellent time management and be able to work well under pressure, to efficiently manage your caseload within this demanding and unpredictable field.

· Experience of MDT working is essential. The service we deliver allows many opportunities for excellent interdisciplinary working within the team and positive relationships with medical, nursing and social care colleagues across frailty, emergency care, and community services.

· There is a structure in place to support regular supervision and professional development. This will be tailored to you and support you to get the most out of your working role.

· You will receive regular in-service training and peer reviewed sessions to discuss & demonstrate work completed.

· Fundamental to the service delivery model, is that our team provide a 7-day service, which compromises a fixed, four-week repeating rota. Due to the nature of the service, we work slightly longer days meaning our hours are condensed over 4 days per week allowing for a greater work life balance. This includes one weekend every 4 weeks.

Clinical Duties

· To assist in the management and treatment of patients under the guidance of a qualified clinician.

· To follow departmental protocols and guidelines referring to a qualified clinician who is available for advice.

· To independently carry out specified assessments, interventions and programmes as planned and discussed with a qualified clinician.

· To monitor and report progress of patients to qualified clinician during the implementation of planned interventions and programmes.

· To hold a caseload as delegated by a qualified clinician, reporting back at agreed timescales, highlighting any necessary actions.

· To work with an individual or group in a variety of settings appropriate to the patients need.

· To modify interventions and programmes within defined parameters and within practice scope.

· To respect the individuality, values, cultural and religious diversity of patients, contributing to the provision of a service sensitive to these needs.

· To ensure patient safety and dignity is maintained at all times, using relevant methods to manage patients with challenging behaviours.

· To utilise effective communication skills to ensure clinical advice and treatment programmes are delivered sensitively, taking into consideration the needs of carers.

· To liaise as appropriate, with members of the multidisciplinary and multi-agency team, facilitating others to continue programmes of care to maximise the achievement of patient outcomes.

· To ensure accurate, up-to-date clinical records are kept, ensuring security and confidentiality is maintained at all times.

· To record and submit clinical activity data as required by the Trust in an accurate and timely manner.

· To ensure the safe and timely discharge of patients from the caseload, as agreed with the qualified clinician.

· To be responsible for safe and competent use of equipment including the provision of support, education and training to other staff, patients and carers as required.

· To be responsible for the maintenance, cleaning, monitoring and loaning of equipment, maintaining its security at all times and keeping accurate records as required.

· To undertake basic risk assessments within the work area as required.

· To maintain an awareness of relevant new and current professional, Trust and developmental standards, policies, procedures and guidelines, ensuring compliance.

· To demonstrate appropriate skills and competencies to ensure safe delivery of patient assessments, interventions and programmes.

· To support the implementation of national & professional guidelines e.g. NICE

· Ensure compliance with Trust policies, procedures and guidelines for self and others, by taking action/alerting senior management team if practice appears to contravene policy, or if concerned about any aspect of patient care.

· To produce and maintain a personal portfolio to demonstrate on-going personal development.

· To participate in the Trust’s appraisal system, undertaking any identified training and development relating to the post to maintain skills and competencies.

· To gain appropriate support from senior colleagues and participate in supervision/peer review to enhance clinical practice.
