We are seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated Consultant in Breast Surgery to join our dynamic Women’s and Children’s Service. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced clinician who is passionate about delivering high‑quality, person‑centred care and contributing to the continued development of our Breast service.

As a key member of our multidisciplinary team, you will provide comprehensive Breastl care, and help drive service improvement initiatives. The post offers a diverse clinical workload, including Rapid Access, elective and emergency Breast surgery, and opportunities to develop special interest sessions aligned to service needs and your own professional aspirations.

You will work closely with colleagues across Radiology, theatres, and outpatient services to support safe, effective pathways of care and an excellent experience for women and families. The role also includes active involvement in clinical governance, audit, teaching, and supervision of junior doctors and wider clinical staff.

Hours per week: 10.50 PAs

Main duties of the job

Breast Surgery services include symptomatic breast clinics, family history and high-risk assessment clinics, breast imaging and biopsy services, and emergency breast care services. Benign breast operative services, including diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, are provided at Macclesfield Hospital. Cancer services include diagnostic work up and surgical management of early breast cancers at Macclesfield Hospital. The service is linked with the Southern Sector Manchester Cancer Network with weekly MDT meetings.

NHS Medical and Dental salaries are set at a national level.  For new starters not already working to UK Medical and Dental terms and conditions of service will be appointed to the minimum paypoint.  The starting salary paypoint can only be increased when there is evidence of relevant, completed year’s experience in terms of nature, type and level of role.  The evidence required to increase a starting salary would be Payslips and details noted in the application form i.e. complete employment history.

Person specification

Educational Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Entry on the GMC (General Medical Council) Specialist Register via CCT (Certificate of Completion of Training) or CESR (CP) (Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration)
  • FRCS (Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons) or qualification of an equivalent level
  • Applicants must have full and specialist registration (and a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC) (or eligible for registration within six months of interview)
  • UK trained applicants are required to be a Holder of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or within six months of award of CCT by date of interview
  • Applicants are required to be on the Specialist Register or due to obtain their CCT within 6 months of interview. CESR candidates must have written GMC confirmation of successful application.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience working at consultant level within NHS
  • Published research papers, thesis on breast topics
  • Presentations at recognised national meetings

TRAINING

Essential criteria
  • Inclusion on General Medical Council’s specialist Register

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working in a Multi-Disciplinary Team
  • Broad experience in Breast Surgery for both screening (in the UK programme) and symptomatic patients working in units with such interests.
  • One year training 50% of time with a Surgeon with a special interest in Breast disease
