The consultants in cardiology are based on the Cardiology ward (7) and the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) with a total of 32 beds, including 4 single rooms and a negative pressure room for pacing and procedures.

The East Cheshire Trust was established in 1993 and is the main provider of secondary health services for people living in East Cheshire. There are currently 438 beds available for general and acute services across the Trust. Each year staff treat around 20,000 patients in our hospitals, see over 116,000 outpatients and manage 48,000 attendances in the Accident and Emergency department.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will contribute to the management of patients on the Cardiology Ward and provide an in-reach service to the Medical Assessment Unit (MAU), other medical wards, and non-medical wards as required. The appointee will play a key role in the care of cardiology inpatients, undertaking at least two ward rounds per week, alongside additional visits during the week to facilitate timely discharges and support the management of acutely unwell patients.

The post holder will also contribute to the development and delivery of innovative models of care, including the running of the cardiology virtual ward to support early discharge and remote monitoring of appropriate patients.

In view of the ongoing expansion of the service, the post holder will participate in CT Coronary Angiography (CTCA) sessions and may provide cross-cover for these activities where required to support service delivery.

The successful candidate will also establish and lead a dedicated thoracic aortopathy clinic, supporting the assessment, surveillance, and management of patients with thoracic aortic disease in line with national guidance and local pathways.

The appointee will have an important role in the supervision and training of junior medical staff in the assessment and management of cardiology patients.
