Job overview

We are looking for an enthusiastic and compassionate Maternity support worker with a passion to provide high quality family focused maternity care to our women and families of East Cheshire.

The role of the Maternity Support Worker is to work under the supervision and direction of a registered midwife to provide the highest possible standard of essentially care for women/birthing people and their families.

The post holder will provide direct delivery of clinical care to all women and newborn infants accessing maternity services and may be based within specialist and integrated teams such as in theatre. Maternity Support Workers may also serve as a point of contact for women/birthing people and their families and provide clinical, physical, psychological and emotional care and support; they provide appropriate information and signpost to other health sector organisations. They report directly to registered practitioners where planned care and tasks delegated by a registered practitioner has been provided. The post holder is required to participate in a flexible 24-hour shift pattern.

Main duties of the job

Under the direct supervision of the Registered Midwife, Maternity Support Workers will work to provide clinical care for a defined caseload of patients to include a variety of clinical care, such as infant feeding support, assessing clinical wellbeing, performing skills such as venepuncture and cannulation.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • NVQ (National Vocational Qualifications) Level 3 in Healthcare/ Direct care or T Level in Healthcare
  • Care certificate
  • Successful completion of the Be AWARE to Care course (or equivalent)
  • GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education) English and Maths (or equivalent such as level 2 functional skills)

Knowledge & Skills

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrates good insight into roles and responsibilities of the post
  • Able to demonstrate an understanding of principles of effective customer care
  • Working as part of a team
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the importance of quality care
  • Demonstrates literacy and numeracy skills /Basic IT skills e.g. e-mail
  • Evidence of Band 2 competency
  • Be competent in the recording of clinical sign observations
  • Good verbal and non-verbal communication skills; within a variety of settings with patients of varying levels of understanding /Able to deal with sensitive issues with tact and diplomacy
