Job overview

An exciting job opportunity has arisen to join our eyecare team. This is a highly specialised role involving visits to educational settings for children with special educational needs. The successful candidate will have prior experience of dispensing optical appliances to children, be able to problem solve with creative thinking and be willing to travel.

Main duties of the job

  • Assess children with special educational needs for the measuring and ordering of appropriate optical appliances
  • Ordering of optical appliances, with consideration for any special facial or physical characteristics, and frame or lens suitability 
  • Verification of optical appliance orders to ensure that they are to the required specification
  • Fitting, alteration and repair of glasses for these children in their educational setting

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To provide a high quality optical dispensing service to children with special educational needs (SEN) in their educational setting including the measuring, ordering, fitting and repairing of items
 To liaise with other members of SEN eye care team (orthoptists and optometrists) for continuity of patient care
 To source adequate optical appliances at competitive prices from appropriate suppliers

  • Safeguarding training
  • Higher qualifications

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience dispensing with children
Desirable criteria
  • Experience dispensing individuals with LD / SEN
  • Experience working in a hospital environment
  • Experience working in a school environment

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Able to demonstrate knowledge of adjustments expected when dispensing children
Desirable criteria
  • Able to demonstrate knowledge of adjustments expected when dispensing individuals with physical or mental disability
