Job overview
This post offers the opportunity to join the Consultant Team within the Intensive Care Unit at Warrington Hospital.
The successful applicant will be a highly motivated Consultant with a CCT (or within 6 months of expected CCT at interview) in Intensive Care Medicine, either as a single CCT holder or as a dual CCT holder with a second speciality.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will contribute to the delivery of high-quality, consultant-led critical care services within a busy and evolving Intensive Care Unit, providing care for a diverse case mix of medical and surgical patients. The role includes participation in the 1:10 consultant on-call rota for Intensive Care Medicine and active involvement in multidisciplinary team working across the Trust.
For candidates with a dual CCT, sessions within the complementary speciality will be supported and arranged (subject to job planning) and can be discussed further with the clinical lead for Intensive Care and the appropriate speciality lead.
In addition to clinical responsibilities, the Consultant will be expected to contribute to education, training, governance, quality improvement, and service development within the department. Teaching of junior doctors, advanced critical care practitioners, and other members of the multidisciplinary team is a key component of the role

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
1. Clinical
a. The post holder will join a team of 9 Consultant intensivists to provide 7-day cover to the Critical Care Unit
b. Along with the existing Consultants the post holder will contribute to the delivery of twice-daily consultant led ward rounds on the ICU an also critical care outreach.
c. Appointees with dual specialty interests (Anaesthesia/Emergency Medicine/Medicine) will have the opportunity to undertake sessions in the complementary specialty (subject to job planning).
d. The post holder will be required to contribute to the ITU on-call rota with a 1:10 commitment for nights and weekends and also the consultant of the week rota. This will be renumerated in keeping with the terms and conditions of service.
e. The post holder will deliver high quality, effective clinical care to patients, and support the implementation of both local and national guidelines and targets.
2. Teaching/Training
a. The post holder will demonstrate a commitment to teaching and development of resident doctors and ACCP’s. The post holder will participate in formal and informal teaching of trainees on intensive care rotation, in addition to supporting education more generally within the trust
b. The post holder will also be expected to support training of undergraduate students from the Universities of Liverpool and Chester.
c. Opportunities to develop the departments simulation training capabilities will be encouraged, especially with a focus on multidisciplinary team training.
d. The appointee will share responsibility for educational and clinical supervision of resident medical staff with other physicians.
3. Research/Quality Improvement
a. The post holder will support the ongoing delivery of clinical trials within the intensive care unit.
b. The individual research, audit and quality improvement interests of the post holder will be encouraged.
4. Continuing Medical Education and Appraisal
a. It is the responsibility of the post holder to ensure they are registered for continuing professional development and are responsible for keeping themselves abreast of new developments and best evidence based practice.
b. The post holder will be considered for study leave to attend formal courses, conferences, etc., and the funding will be available according to the agreed terms and conditions of service for the medical staff within the NHS.
c. The post holder will undertake annual appraisal and is subject to revalidation by the GMC
5. Administrative and Managerial Responsibilities
a. The post holder is expected to participate in all aspects of administrative and managerial activities within the department, and when requested, within the wider hospital.
i. This includes but is not limited to attendance at monthly governance and senior leadership meetings, provision of statements for coronial proceedings, morbidity and mortality reviews and other clinical governance activity.
6. Other Duties
a. The post holder will be expected to support NHSBT in the provision and care of (potential) organ donors with the guidance and support of the Specialist Nurse for Organ Donation and the Consultant Lead for Organ Donation
b. The post holder will participate in the trust’s Major Incident Procedure, when required, and when necessary take a role in the Site Major Incident Team.
c. The consultant will hold responsibility in respect to the reasonable and effective use of Trust Resources.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Registration with GMC
- Primary Medical Degree
- FFICM (or eligible for fellowship of the faculty)
- Eligible (or within 6 months of eligibility) for entry in the GMC specialist register by CCT or CESR for Intensive Care Medicine
Desirable criteria
- Teaching or Leadership Qualification
- Relevant higher degree
- ATLS/ALS/APLS instructor
- FUSIC (Heart) or other echo qualification
Experience
Essential criteria
- High level of clinical experience and competence in all aspects of Intensive Care Medicine
- Understanding of current issues within Critical Care and the future direction of the speciality
- Evidence of personal involvement in management and administrative roles in healthcare.
Desirable criteria
- Subspeciality interest in echocardiography, ultrasound for critical care
- Evidence of active involvement in risk management
Skills, knowledge and competencies
Essential criteria
