Orthopaedic Occupational Therapy Assistant - (Band 2)
We are seeking an Occupational Therapy Assistant to work within our Orthopaedic OT team, delivering therapy to patients on both the Elective Orthopaedic and Trauma wards.

Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will be involved primarily with our team on the Warrington site for trauma patients, assisting the Occupational Therapists as they rehabilitate the Orthopaedic patients and will be committed to developing our service.
Within the Therapy Team there will also be some housekeeping and administration tasks to be performed within our Outpatient service.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
To carry out duties, delegated by the qualified therapists, for patients presenting with a range of Orthopaedic conditions. This may include any of the three Hospital sites.
These duties will include:
- To implement aspects of a treatment programme developed by a therapist, including the use of therapeutic equipment.
- To evaluate patient’s response to activities and ensure that any changes in the patient’s condition are reported back to the supervising therapist.
- To occasionally work in other areas such as patient’s homes.
- To implement all aspects of trust infection control policy.
- To contribute to the safeguarding of our patients.
- To assist in general administration, clerical and housekeeping duties relating to the area of work.
There may be a requirement to contribute to the delivery of a 7-day therapy service.
Main tasks and responsibilities
Patient /Clinical care
- To implement aspects of a treatment programme developed by a therapist, including the use of therapeutic equipment.
- To evaluate patient’s response to activities and ensure that any changes in the patient’s condition are reported back to the supervising therapist.
- To work across the Hospital site’s and possibly, occasionally in the Community, such as in patient’s homes, as part of a home visit.
- To implement all aspects of trust infection control policy.
- To contribute to the safeguarding of our clients.
Management responsibilities:
- To ensure that patient activities can be carried out in a safe environment by contributing to the general housekeeping of the department, including checking equipment is clean and safe for use.
- To undertake administrative duties, e.g., arranging patient appointments, transport, and assisting in collection of statistical data.
- To demonstrate own duties to inexperienced staff and students.
- To contribute to staff rota to enable cover during bank holidays and at weekends.
Communication and relationships
- To communicate effectively with patients, with due regard to physical, sensory and cognitive difficulties, respecting their views, autonomy and culture.
- To be able to reassure and persuade patients to undertake the necessary therapeutic activities.
- To work as a member of a therapy team, but also as a member of the wider multi-disciplinary team, fostering professional relationships with team members.
- To report effectively in both written and oral formats, both to the team and your supervising therapists on patients’ performance and progress
- To occasionally deal with upset patients and their relatives in a tactful and supportive way.
Governance
- To review and reflect on your own practice, take an active part in your own personal appraisal and development programmes, including the ongoing development of a portfolio.
- To contribute to the ongoing improvement and modernisation of the service.
- Contributing to training and induction programmes and being involved in audit and evaluation activities.
- To work to local policies and procedures, for example those regarding manual handling, lone working, etc.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- NVQ 1 / 2 in related area or equivalent.
Desirable criteria
- NVQ 1 / 2 in a non related area
Experience
Essential criteria
- Ability to undertake in house competency-based training programme of 6 to 12 months duration.
Desirable criteria
- Previous experience in a health and social care setting
General
Essential criteria
- Good communication skills, both written and verbal, including ability to work with patients with communication difficulties.
- Able to act in professional manner
Desirable criteria
- Computer skills
