Job overview
Applications are invited for a Locum Consultant Cardiologist at Leighton Hospital, Crewe. This is a fixed term post June 2026 - June 2027 due to sabbatical leave.
The Cardiology Department at MCHFT is made up of an innovative and dynamic team who are keen in developing and expanding service provision.
Main duties of the job
Applications are invited from those with a subspecialty interest in cardiac imaging but applicants with heart failure subspecialty, Inheritable Cardiac Conditions (ICC), bradycardia pacing and general Cardiology are also invited to apply.
Consultants are expected to partake in a half-day weekend ward round on a 1 in 6 basis (0.5PA). During the working week (Monday-Friday 9am-5pm), the department operates a “Consultant of the Day” model on a 1:8 basis. The post does not include any out of hours on-call commitment.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
This post is offered initially at 10 Programmed Activities (PAs) per week. This will include 9 PAs of Direct Clinical Care (DCC) and 1 PAs of Supporting Professional Activities (SPA) per week. Job plan can be discussed.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Full GMC Registration
- Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via: • CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview) • CESR or • European Community Rights
- BSE accreditation in transthoracic echocardiography
Desirable criteria
- Other postgraduate qualification e.g. MD, PhD
- Cardiac CT Level 2 or 3 accreditation
- Cardiac MRI Level 2 or certification
- British Society of Echocardiography accreditation (transthoracic and/or transoesophageal)
Experience
Essential criteria
- Wide experience in cardiology including the management of inpatients and outpatient clinics

- Knowledge and experience of the application of information technology in cardiology

Essential criteria
- Evidence to allow accreditation as a Consultant Clinical Supervisor for trainee doctors with the GMC
- Experience and interest in teaching both junior medical and non-medical staff
- Evidence of commitment to continuing professional development and lifelong learning
- Commitment to teaching
Desirable criteria
- Evidence to allow accreditation as a Consultant Educational Supervisor for trainee doctors with the GMC
- Post-graduate certification in medical education
- Special interest in role development and staff training
- Membership of relevant medical associations / learned societies
Other

- Ability to communicate effectively with patients and staff at all levels of the organisation
- An understanding of the current NHS environment, particularly in relation to reforms, initiatives and issues.
