Job overview

We have an exciting opportunity for a Consultant Ophthalmologist with a keen specialist interest in emergency eye care to join the team at Abergele Eye Unit on a fixed term basis as maternity leave cover to 19th March 2026

This is a part time 6 session contract (please refer to the Welsh Consultants’ contract for precise contractual details) and will consists of dedicated emergency eye care clinics and theatre sessions as required. All theatre sessions have senior anaesthetic cover.

There will be dedicated secretarial/admin support and mentoring will be available to newly appointed consultants.

Main duties of the job

The Abergele Eye Unit is a well-established ophthalmic unit located in a separate site six miles from the main YGC hospital site. Additional peripheral clinics are performed at Colwyn Bay.

This is a part-time post consisting of 6 sessions per week (please refer to the Welsh Consultants’ contract for precise contractual details). And will be split as 5 DCC and 1 SPA’s. There will be dedicated secretarial/admin support.

The fixed sessions will predominately be based covering the emergency eye care unit. 

The remaining flexible sessions would be used to support professional development, teaching, research, clinical governance, patient administration and to cover on-call commitments. Mentoring will be available to newly appointed consultants.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC Registration
  • Emergency Eye Care Fellowship
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of fellowship/training or competencies in Glaucoma or Oculoplastics
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register or subsequent entry within 6 months of the interview.

Experiences

Essential criteria
  • Broad Based general experience in Ophthalmology including complex cataracts, emergency surgeries and procedures
Desirable criteria
  • Additional specialist qualification or qualification, relevant skills experience in the relevant specialty.

Clinical Governance

Essential criteria
  • An understanding of the Strategic and Operational issues underpinning Clinical Governance and their application in daily practice and evidence of such.

Ability

Essential criteria
  • Ability to apply knowledge. Ability to write relevant, legible clinical notes. Safe and effective verbal communication skills.
  • Willingness to involve patients in their management.
  • Ability to handle difficult interviews with patients or relatives with tact and sensitivity
  • Basic IT skills
Desirable criteria
  • Advanced IT Skills

Management

Essential criteria
  • An understanding of NHS management practices and their application and evidence of such.
  • A willingness to attend and actively participate in the departmental management meetings
Desirable criteria
  • Management courses / qualifications.
  • Departmental administration experience.
