Job overview

We are seeking an enthusiastic General and Colorectal Surgeon to join our department at Glan Clwyd Hospital. 

The need for this post has arisen from the increasing demand for consultant leadership in the provision of benign and malignant colorectal surgical services. There will be opportunities to develop further sub-specialty interests within Colorectal and General Surgery. The out of hours on call commitment will be 1 in 8.

There will be opportunities to undertake roles within Medical Education both within the department and in the wider Health Board. For those interested in research the post offers the chance to work with the North Wales Clinical Research Centre. The department has established links with a number of universities, and other institutions, for collaborative research projects.  

The successful candidate will join a closely-knit team of eight consultants in the department of General Surgery. There is excellent support from colleagues in gastroenterology, anaesthetics & critical care, radiology, and other specialties, as well as from clinical nurse specialists, the nutrition team, and surgical trainees. The North Wales Oncology Centre is on site, allowing close collaboration with oncologists for MDT working and clinical trials.

Main duties of the job

The duties outlined below are not definitive and may be changed in accordance with the needs of the service.  The post holder will be expected to undertake the following duties:

  • Provide a service of the highest quality.                          
  • Work flexibly with colleagues to achieve the hospital agreed planned activity for in-patient and outpatient services.               
  • Participate in multi-disciplinary team meetings (MDT)           
  • Ensure the standards are maintained and developed through clinical audit, evidence-based research and appraisal. The Health Board supports surgeon’s going through the revalidation process.
  • Be familiar with the College curricula for junior doctor training and contribute to their training requirements, including tutorials, on-the-job teaching, mentoring, appraisal and assessment.
  • Agree an annual job plan with the General Manager and Clinical Director/ Lead Clinician and participate in annual appraisal.
  • Undertake all necessary administrative duties associated with the care of patients.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC Specialist Registration or within 6 months of obtaining CCT from date of interview
  • FRCS(Gen.Surg) or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Higher research degree
  • Higher qualification in Medical Education

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Wide experience in all aspects of General Surgery
  • Advanced training in colorectal surgery, including laparoscopic resections.
  • Understand NHS management practices and their application
Desirable criteria
  • Accredited to perform colonoscopy
  • Advanced sub-specialty colorectal training and experience, e.g. Pelvic floor surgery,

Research and Audit

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of participation in research and audit projects
Desirable criteria
  • Completed audit projects
  • Research based publication

Teaching and Training

Essential criteria
  • A commitment to teaching both trainees and allied health professionals
  • Evidence of teaching experience
