Job overview

We are excited to be looking for a new colleague to join our expanding team of substantive consultants based at Wrexham Maelor Hospital. The post is a new addition to the current team of ten consultants currently working in the East area of the Health Board. The post has arisen from plans to reconfigure and strengthen our existing services. We are seeking to strengthen our developing frailty services.

The hospital prides itself on its friendly staff, and a doctors mess shared by both juniors and seniors gives ample opportunity to socialise whilst also providing consultant dining. Wrexham is superbly located in North East Wales, on the border with Cheshire and Shropshire. Excellent lines of communication allow easy access to Chester, Liverpool and Manchester, but also provide a gateway to the North Wales coastline and Snowdonia National Park. With its outstanding natural beauty, North Wales offers a multitude of recreational activities for individuals and families alike. With competitive house prices and excellent schools on either side of the border, the post gives a wonderful opportunity for the appointee to strike a healthy work-life balance.

Main duties of the job

·   Deliver a consultant-led Geriatric Medicine service at Wrexham Maelor Hospital for the diagnosis and management of both outpatients and inpatients

·   Work within a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals and managers to further develop Care of the Elderly services. There are many areas of future growth for our department and a successful candidate will be welcome to play an integral part in shaping future services

·   Participate in the general medical on-call rota and post-take ward rounds, providing leadership and support to the on-call medical team.

·   Take consultant responsibility for allocated inpatients, with support from a designated team of junior doctors.

·   Contribute to the teaching and training of junior doctors and medical students. Many consultants are Educational and Named Clinical Supervisors to junior doctors, and most consultants are offered honorary undergraduate clinical teacher status with Cardiff University.
