To provide expert health and safety advice and support to all personnel within the Trust and assist with developing and implementing health and safety management systems, processes, policies and guidance.

To promote health and safety Trust-wide, through local health and safety meetings and site visits. Supporting full consultation and engagement with staff.

The post holder will enhance staff, patient and visitor safety through proactive health and safety inspections and audits, working with our staff toward positive health and safety culture. This will include the development and promotion of effective relationships with a range of internal and external stakeholders.

The role will include the identification, investigation and management of incidents and risk to support learning across the organisation and throughout networks.

The post holder will provide cover and represent the Health and Safety Manager as required and within the scope of their role.

Main duties of the job

Generate a rolling program of audits and inspections to support our staff in a positive health and safety culture.

Provide competent and expert health and safety advice across the organisation liaising with all levels of management and staff.

Motivate colleagues to engage with the health and safety agenda.

Engage with staff-side health and safety representatives to deliver key health and safety legislation relating to consultation and promoting the importance of staff- side representatives.

Assist the health and safety manager in the operational management of health and safety issues on a day-to-day basis to provide an effective, efficient and focused service.

Assist in producing health and safety work plans to provide the Trust with assurances with regards to its statutory duties in relation to health and safety.

Lead, manage and support the Health and Safety Support Officer (HSSO) in all their duties.

Support the health and safety manager to develop reports to the Trust board and its committees and other committees, or groups, as necessary.

We’re an NHS community and mental health provider Trust based in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.  We deliver community and hospital-based care to improve people’s physical and mental health.  We also provide specialist support to people with dementia or a learning disability.

Over 4,000 people make up the Trust.  This includes doctors, nurses, therapists, plus admin and support staff.

Approximately 568,000 people live here.  A third of people who live in Cornwall are supported by acute hospital services in Devon.  As a result, we also work closely with our partners in Devon.  In the summer, and during other holidays lots of people choose to visit the area.  This increase the numbers of people who use out services.

Education / Qualifications and Relevant Experience

Essential criteria
  • Specialist knowledge of health and safety to level 3 (IOSH/NEBOSH) through training and experience.
  • IOSH member or working towards
  • Experience and knowledge of management.
  • Experience of working in a multi-disciplinary team
Desirable criteria
  • Proven track record operating in the field of health and safety
