Occupational Therapist - Surgery

Band 6

Job overview

This job is currently only open to people who already work for the NHS in Cornwall or the Isles of Scilly.

We are committed to supporting our dedicated staff, so only current employees of the following organisations can apply:

  • Cornwall Foundation Trust
  • Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust
  • Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Integrated Care Board

If you do not currently work for one of these NHS organisations, your application will not be considered at this time.

This is an exciting opportunity for experienced Band 5 OTs looking to progress their career or an established Band 6 looking for a new role to further develop their skills and knowledge in Colorectal Surgery.

Our service provides acute inpatient rehabilitation alongside safe and effective discharge planning for patients presenting with surgical colorectal conditions and procedures including input pre- and post-operatively, decreased mobility and functional ability after surgery, exacerbation of long-term conditions, recovery from acute surgical problems further impacted by comorbidities, and deconditioning. You will work closely with an MDT and medical colleagues to plan and provide effective rehabilitation and support discharge planning.

The role includes occupational therapy input, and ongoing development, in a colorectal surgery prehabilitation service which is currently being trialled, alongside specialist physiotherapist and specialist dietician.

Main duties of the job

As a Band 6 OT you will carry a caseload, which will include the completion of initial and standardised OT assessments, formulating client centred goals and treatment plans for each patient on your caseload. We endeavour to support your learning and development formally through a robust appraisal process and regular supervision and through informal teaching and training. You will also develop staff management skills with the opportunity to supervise and develop junior therapy staff, support workers and be part of the teaching / training programme within the wider MDT

Working for our organisation

The Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust (RCHT) is the main provider of acute and specialist care services in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. We serve a population of around 500,000 people - a figure that can increase significantly with

visitors during the busiest times of the year. We employ approximately 6,700 staff and have a budget of approximately £580 million.

We are a teaching hospital in partnership with the University of Exeter Medical School, University of Plymouth School of Nursing and Midwifery, and Peninsula Dental School.

The Knowledge Spa on the Royal Cornwall Hospital site is the base for medical and nursing as well as ongoing education for health professions in clinical and non-clinical roles.

Keeping at the forefront of medical advances, we are continually developing our clinical services as well as our facilities and are committed to maximising the range of specialist care that can be offered locally. Allied to this is a growing reputation for research and innovation.
