Job overview

This job is a new consultant post and currently has a 50% commitment to pain and 50% to anaesthesia with input into the emergency general anaesthetic rota’s.

Royal Cornwall Hospital offers a comprehensive pain management service across Cornwall providing outpatient services to St Austell and Penzance as well as Royal Cornwall Hospital itself.

 

The busy acute and chronic pain service offers both inpatient and outpatient care as well as having strong links with the palliative care services within Cornwall to provide a community based intrathecal pain service as required.

A purpose built clinic provides space for outpatient work and minor procedures and there are allocated x-ray theatre sessions for more complex procedures.

Major procedures such as spinal cord stimulators and intrathecal pumps are undertaken in a dedicated operating theatre session, currently at St Michael’s Hospital. Inpatient beds are available by arrangement.

We serve a population of around 500,000 people - a figure that can increase significantly with visitors during the busiest times of the year. Main duties of the job

Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of acute and chronic pain.

Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of Anaesthesia.

Share with colleagues’ the responsibility for the day-to-day management of the Pain and Anaesthetic departments.

Teaching and training of junior staff and medical students where applicable.

To have responsibility for ensuring active participation in continuing medical education (CME).

To actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and Audit.

To participate in quality improvement, data analysis and information presentation, and service development, as appropriate. 

To attend care group and directorate business, operational and governance meetings as appropriate.

Fulfil duties of weekly timetable including any out-of-hours responsibilities.

 We are a teaching hospital in partnership with the University of Exeter Medical School, University of Plymouth School of Nursing and Midwifery, and Peninsula Dental School.

The Knowledge Spa on the Royal Cornwall Hospital site is the base for medical and nursing as well as ongoing education for health professions in clinical and non-clinical roles.
