Job overview
The post of Consultant Radiographer in Breast Imaging will deliver autonomous clinical practice of breast services in the Royal Cornwall Hospital NHS Trust in accordance with the NHS Cancer Plan. There is a requirement to work as part of a clinical team lead by the Director of Breast Screening to provide and develop consultant level radiographic leadership and practice in the field of diagnostic breast imaging.
The post will play a key role as an expert professional, providing advice to Medical Consultants and other health professionals and multi-disciplinary team (MDT) groups, contributing to improved outcomes for patients, seeking to develop further the patient focused approach to care. The post holder will provide cover for Radiology Breast Consultant duties working flexibly where required.
The post requires provision of diagnostic imaging to the same level of competency as a Consultant Radiologist, to include screening and symptomatic mammographic interpretation, diagnostic breast ultrasound and percutaneous interventional breast procedures under ultrasound, stereotactic or clinical guidance. Responsibilities are also required related to the provision of education, training, supervision, mentorship and ongoing support for under and post graduate radiographers, and specialist radiology trainees in the study and development of knowledge and skills in the field of breast imaging.
Main duties of the job
As an integral member of the breast care team, the successful candidate will be involved in:
Independent clinical breast examination
Independent breast screening and symptomatic mammographic interpretation including formulation of radiology report
Independent breast screening and symptomatic breast ultrasound examination including image interpretation and formulation of radiology report
Independent percutaneous breast procedures under free hand, ultrasound or stereotactic guidance to include cyst aspiration, abscess or seroma drainage, FNA, core biopsy, vacuum assisted core biopsy isotope localisation and localisation wire insertion
Effective clinical leadership, communicating and encouraging others to deliver best practice and evidence-based care to patients within the Trust
Provision of expert clinical radiographic input into the clinical governance strategy of the Trust

Person specification
Qualifications
Essential criteria
- BSc in Diagnostic Radiography or equivalent
- Clinical Registration with HCPC
- Masters degree
- Post graduate qualifications in breast imaging – reporting/intervention/ultrasound (or will have achieved all in next 12 months)
Desirable criteria
- Teaching qualification e.g. PGCE
- Working towards or having achieved Doctoral level qualification
Experience
Essential criteria
- Significant experience of working in a senior position within a breast imaging team
- Knowledge and understanding of NHS policy & NHS BSP plan and targets
- Experience of working independently in an extended clinical role to the level of a Consultant Radiologist as outlined in the job description
- Experience of independent breast mammography interpretation and reporting, ultrasound and interventional procedures
Desirable criteria
- Experience in clinical teaching /education
- Evidence of multi-modality knowledge eg MRI
