Specialty Doctors in Emergency Medicine

We are looking for motivated individuals to join and expand our enthusiastic and friendly team of eight Specialty Doctors at the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Emergency Department.

You will be joining our dynamic Emergency Medicine team as a specialty doctor. Our team prides itself on our multi-professional working and we continually strive to offer the highest standards in emergency care. The department has a varied workforce with consultants able to offer advice and support in a range of extended interests including Pre-Hospital Emergency Medicine, Paediatric Emergency Medicine, Point of Care Ultrasonography, Postgraduate and Undergraduate Medical Education, Clinical Governance, and Medical Leadership.

This role will see successful applicants join our expanding tier of specialty doctors who, alongside our rotational higher specialist training doctors, provide 24-hours-a-day shopfloor presence. The day-to-day clinical work is varied with excellent exposure to a wide range of presentations across the full spectrum of medical, surgical, paediatrics and trauma. There is a shopfloor consultant presence from 0800 until 2200 seven days a week, with an on-call consultant available outside of these times to both assist with critically ill or injured patients and provide advice and guidance as required.

The thriving tourism industry ensures we see over 80,000 patients per annum with a varied case mix and a high proportion of trauma.

Main duties of the job

Doctors interested in pursuing a career in Emergency Medicine will find these posts offer invaluable experience with regular teaching programmes aimed at supporting our specialty doctors with their FRCEM preparations. There are excellent research opportunities within the department; we routinely participate in recruitment to a variety of clinical trials.

The consultant body  offers support in sub-specialist interests including POCUS, PHEM, global health and medical education. We host students from University of Exeter Medical School, providing ample opportunities to become involved with undergraduate teaching. Early participation on ALS, APLS and ATLS is enabled by our locally run courses.

We consistently rank highly across all domains on the GMC’s national training survey reflecting the supportive environment and highly varied clinical exposure on offer.

Full support will be offered to candidates wishing to pursue CESR accreditation, with rotations being offered in Acute Medicine, Anaesthesia, Critical Care and Paediatrics as required. It is anticipated that CESR competencies would be gained within  3-5 years, dependent on prior experience.

Contracts are based on a ten session Specialty Doctor contract,  one session will be for supporting professional activities and  includes annual and study leave.
