Job overview

We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic  Speech and Language Therapist to work at The Royal Cornwall Hospital Truro.

The successful candidate will be working  as part of a SLT team in the acute hospital seeing a range of adult patients presenting with communication and swallowing difficulties.

The Job role offers potential opportunities for regular CPD development, NQP and dysphagia competencies, developing specialist skills in the areas of video-fluoroscopy, Tracheostomy care, gaining experience  working with complex  Acute patient presentations. 

This post is open to those who are newly qualified or soon to be registered.

Main duties of the job

·         The post holder will be responsible within scope for providing adult SLT service for patients on General Acute wards across the Royal Cornwall Hospital Trust sites including RCHT Treliske and West Cornwall Hospital.

·         To jointly manage a caseload of patients in conjunction with the Acute and General Ward SLT Teams, using evidence-based practice.

·         To provide assessment, diagnosis and treatments to adult Acute admission patients presenting with swallowing difficulties and communication difficulties, within scope of own competence.

·         To assess, plan, implement and evaluate interventions, with support from senior staff as needed.

·         To liaise with multi-disciplinary teams and relevant care professionals and agencies.

·         The post holder will work under the supervision of the SLT Team Lead and Specialist SLTs.

·         This post may become part of the developing Speech and Language Therapy rotation scheme. This will be a scheme, which spans across different SLT settings and different areas of practice across Cornwall.

PRACTICAL AND INTELLECTUAL SKILLS (INCLUDING ANY SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE)

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of a range of assessments and interventions.
  • Ability to work in teams.
  • Ability to recognise own wellbeing needs
  • Computer literate.
  • Well developed communication skills, such as empathy, negotiation and motivation, presenting of complex facts in an understandable way.
  • Presentation skills.
  • Reflective practitioner.
  • Ability to time- Application Form Interview manage, with support from supervisor.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working with adult patients during training or post qualification.
  • Experience of working with adult patients with acquired conditions during training or post qualification
  • Experience of working without independently during training
  • Experience of working with a multi disciplinary team.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working with AAC.
  • Experience of working with dysphagic clients.
  • Experience of working in the acute setting
  • Experience of triaging / prioritisation

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Degree or equivalent recognised by The Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists.
  • Registered with HCPC.
  • Professional qualification taken in English language or appropriate qualification from the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).]
Desirable criteria
  • Member of RCSLT
  • Dysphagia Qualification or evidence of RCSLT dysphagia competencies commenced
