Job overview

Please note: Although this role is being advertised by East Lancashire Hospitals Trust, the role is based at, and working on behalf of, University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust properties through the One Lancashire and South Cumbria (One LSC) corporate collaboration.

The Estates department at Furness General Hospital is a group of highly skilled electrical, mechanical, and plumbing engineers, creative building craftpersons, and dedicated support staff.

We are looking to recruit a motivated and enthusiastic Estates Officer - Mechanical to join us.

You should be experienced, time served, and suitably qualified in a mechanical discipline. Ideally, mechanical plant maintenance, fault finding, and repairs. Ideally, you should also be qualified to NVQ Level 4/HNC or above.

Healthcare experience would be advantageous but not essential - as full training will be given.

Flexible working and the ability to participate in an on-call rota is required.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be responsible for managing all mechanical related operations at FGH. This includes taking on the role of Mechanical AP, Ventilation AP, Water Safety AP, and being responsible for the mechanical permit to work system for the site.

The role involves managing internal and external labour ensuring their compliance with HTM and H&S regulations.

The successful candidate will be expected to manage all mechanical aspects of property maintenance for trust properties and other organisation’s properties on behalf of the Trust.

To supervise and carry out line manager duties for trade staff, participate in the training of junior staff and apprentices, and to ensure they receive work experience, upskilling, and competency based task training.

To ensure materials, technical information, and access, is available for trade staff and contractors to fulfil their duties.

To assist, and deputise for, the site Engineering Manager, as required.

To carry out estates surveys, estates returns, manage minor project works, and assist in the monitoring of energy usage.

Working for our organisation

We operate from three main hospitals - Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community health care premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.

FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.

WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.

All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Recognised mechanical apprenticeship or equivalent training and certification.
  • NVQ3, HNC/ONC or equivalent in mechanical engineering.
  • A recognised health & safety qualification such as IOSH or NEBOSH
Desirable criteria
  • Management/leadership qualification.
  • Recognised H&S qualification Authorised Person for specialist NHS Plant and Equipment

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of managing in an engineering or building services industry
  • IT skills
Desirable criteria
  • Healthcare experience and a thorough knowledge of HTM01-08.
  • A thorough knowledge of statutory and mandatory regulations
