Job overview

The Ophthalmology Department cares for patients of all ages attending a wide range of ophthalmic clinics. We have Doctor/Nurse led clinics on all sites. There is currently a vacancy for a 24 hour  part-time Band 3 Clinical Support Worker Post at Furness General Hospital. 

Within this post you will work in general Ophthalmology clinics and more specialised ophthalmic clinics, preoperative assessment and support the organisation and running theatre lists on a day to day basis, this provides the opportunity to cover all different aspects of Ophthalmic Care.

You will undergo in house training specialising in Ophthalmic Nursing care.

You will be expected to complete the ophthalmic competencies for the post that are required to work in the department.

Main duties of the job

Main duties include:

Work in support of and under the direction of a registered 
nurse, providing nursing care and assistance to patients 
within defined parameters specified by the Registered Nurse 
(RN).

Record patient information.

Provide basic patient care and document that care in the 
patient records.

Agreed clinical tasks, clerical duties and phlebotomy.
Be required to participate in working flexible hours to the needs of the service.

Working for our organisation

We operate from three main hospitals - Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community healthcare premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.


FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.


WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life-threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.


All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.


Our community services for adults are provided in people’s homes, community centres, clinics, GP Practices, community hospitals and our main hospitals. Our aim is to work with people to help them remain independent, improve their health and manage their conditions through high quality care, advice and support.

Person specification

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Good general education
  • Basic literacy and numeracy skills
  • Willingness to undertake NVQ level 3 in care related area

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Manual handling of patients, using lifting aids
  • Previous experience in a care environment
  • Ability to work as part of a team, as well as on own initiative or with minimal supervision
Desirable criteria
  • Awareness of the NHS structure and current issues
  • IT skills to basic level
  • Willingness to undertake CSW training in care related area Completed Trust Support Worker Programme

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively (to understand and be understood).
  • IT skills – basic level
  • Understands confidentiality
  • Good basic hygiene skills (e.g. food handling, hand washing etc).
