Job overview

Ward 7 FGH are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated  individual to join our dedicated team. Ward 7 is a fast paced respiratory and general medical ward.  

Ward 7 has 36 beds and carers for patients with acute and long term respiratory illnesses. There is opportunities to gain knowledge and experience in all aspects of acute medical nursing. 

Any successful candidates will be fully supported, with the opportunity for managerial development and ongoing clinical skills development. 

Main duties of the job

Provide effective leadership and support to all grades of staff.  

Regularly be the nurse in charge of shifts - making decisions and ensuring the smooth running of the unit.

Ensure the ward is clean and provides a safe environment for patients and staff.

To deputise for the Ward Manager when required.

Participate in directorate/management responsibilities. 

Able to actively assess, plan, implement & evaluate patient care with the multidisciplinary team, incorporating the whole of the patients’ pathway.

Assessment and management of acutely unwell patients and the support of junior staff in this also.

Aware of the structure and organisation of the NHS and regulatory body’s code of practice implementing this into nursing practice.

Participate in Clinical Governance by participating in auditing effectiveness of practice and incorporating findings.

Act as mentor or assessor in supervising and teaching of junior staff and unregistered staff.

Have key working relationships with all MDT members.

Working for our organisation

We operate from three main hospitals -Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community health care premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.

FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.

WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.

All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

Education and qualifications

Essential criteria
  • 1st level registered nurse
  • Post registration qualification in relevant area that has enhanced clinical practice
  • Teaching qualification e.g city and guilds
  • Mentoring and assessing qualification
Desirable criteria
  • Post registration management/leadership qualification or willingness to undertake a post registration certificate in management/leadership

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of clinical competence and credibility in clinical speciality
  • Evidence of teaching, mentoring and developing staff
  • Understanding of setting and monitoring of standards
  • Able to assume a lead clinical role as appropriate
  • Ability to work as part of the multidisciplinary clinical team
Desirable criteria
  • recent management/leadership experience relevant to clinical speciality

Skills, Ability and Knowledge

  • Demonstrable basic and advanced clinical skills e.g: Peripheral venous cannulation, Physical assessment skills, Basic life support/ILS/Alert, Venepuncture, ECG
