We are offering an exciting career opportunity for an experienced Occupational Therapist to join our Inpatient Occupational Therapy Team based at Furness General Hospital as a Clinical Lead. We are looking for an innovative and enthusiastic team player to fill the position. We can offer a varied experience where you will be able to develop both clinical and managerial skills in an acute setting.
The post holder's role will primarily cover the medical wards supporting the inpatient team across all the acute wards including surgery and orthopaedics. The post holder will hold an advanced caseload, using a range of knowledge and skills to provide Occupational therapy interventions to patients within our organisation.
You will be joining a team of occupational therapists and physiotherapists working closely with the multidisciplinary team, complex case management team and our community services.
Main duties of the job
To manage a designated case load with complex needs utilising highly skilled assessments and therapeutic interventions, by using the principles of occupational therapy in an integrated and client-centred way supported by evidence-based practice.
To have the opportunity to develop your skills with complex manual handling with appropriate training and support from experienced colleagues.
Play an integral part within the multidisciplinary team both clinically and developmentally. Evaluate occupational therapy interventions in line with national service specifications and professional guidelines.
To provide leadership for the Inpatient Occupational Therapy team and junior staff through supervision and appraisal.
Support the Service Management Team in day to day management, reviewing services and implementing service developments.
Working for our organisation
We operate from three main hospitals-Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community healthcare premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.
FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.
WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.
All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

Education and Qualification
Essential criteria
- Health and Care Professions Council registered Occupational Therapist.
- Diploma or Degree in Occupational Therapy approved by the Royal College of OT, UK
- Post graduate training in specified clinical area to masters level or equivalent.
- Accredited training in risk assessment and risk management.
- Practice placement educator accreditation.
Desirable criteria
- Leadership and first line management training
- Membership of the British Association of Occupational Therapists.
Experience
Essential criteria
- Relevant knowledge, skills and experience at OT (Specialist) level working as an experienced autonomous practitioner.
- Post registration experience in a specialist clinical area relevant to the post.
- Experience as a supervisor of registered OT’s or support staff or designated health/social care workers.
Desirable criteria
- Experience of research or audit
Skills, ability and knowledge
Essential criteria
- Transferable knowledge and skills at OT specialist level with aptitude to develop to advanced OT practitioner level.
- Specialist knowledge and skills in relevant clinical areas for this post.
- Ability to analyse professional and ethical issues
- Advanced assessment, observation, evaluation and reporting skills.
- Knowledge and in depth understanding of current best practice in OT
- Effective personal organisational skills to manage own workload and to determine priorities to support delivery of the site OT service
- Ability to manage work pressures and identify when support is required
- Ability to work autonomously and set own priorities.
- Ability to organise and respond effectively to complex information
- Detailed knowledge of health and social care legislation and guidelines e.g. Department of Health documents, National clinical guidelines and application to OT practice.

- Monitor and apply Health & Safety and risk management policies.
- Advanced understanding of team / group dynamics.
- Written and oral communication skills in English sufficient to communicate effectively with patients to gain consent and explain treatment interventions and gain information required for the patient’s medical/social history relevant to OT

Personal Qualities
Essential criteria
- Ability to meet the physical requirements of the post
- Ability to participate in manual handling tasks and therapeutic handling, using skills, developed through practice, including dexterity, coordination and physical effort during OT interventions and the use of specialist tools and materials and installation of equipment.
- Ability to travel to provide assessment and treatment to patients in the community and to attend clinical and management meetings off site.
- Willingness to work flexibly to meet unexpected and unusual circumstances related to providing direct patient care
