Job overview

Trainee Anatomical Pathology Technician, band 4 (Annex 21) , 37.5 hours per week hours per week 

Vacancy for a trainee Anatomical Pathology technician at the Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle.  Consideration will given to qualified APTs who may wish to apply.

You will part of the Cell Sciences team working alongside the Histology Team based at the Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle.

You will be required to receipt and release the deceased, train in the post mortem room, work with external agencies eg the police, funeral directors.

The Trust is committed to safeguarding adults and children therefore if the post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (ROA) 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (as amended) the successful candidate(s) will be subject to a criminal records check with the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). Standard Check: £18 + Administration cost of £3.85 = £21.85. Deducted at £6.85 from 1st month salary and £5 deducted from salary over following 3 months.

Enhanced Check: £38 + administration cost of £3.90 = £41.90. Deducted at £11.90 from 1st month salary and £10 deducted from salary over following 3 months.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • 5 GCSEs or equivalent, grade A-C, including English, maths and a science ideally biology.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Working with the deceased or working with patients and public in a healthcare environment.
  • Computer literacy.
Desirable criteria
  • Mortuary work, including assisting at post mortem
  • Data entry.

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Awareness of the range of skills required of a mortuary technician
  • Mortuary health and safety issues
Desirable criteria
  • Law concerning deaths, their certification and the role of the Coroner.
  • Requirements of the Human Tissue Act 2004.
  • UKAS accreditation

Skill and Aptitudes

Essential criteria
  • Able to use initiative appropriately and prioritise work.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Able to work independently and with others
Desirable criteria
  • Dissection techniques for post mortem examination.
