Job overview

To provide expert advice and support on a daily basis to a wide-ranging workforce on all aspects of safeguarding work, including highly complex, difficult, sensitive and emotive situations.

To work closely with other Named and Designated Professionals across the network, supporting all activities necessary to ensure that NCIC meets its responsibilities in safeguarding.

To contribute to the strategic development organisation of safeguarding services. 

To ensure that robust systems are in place to ensure effective, timely information sharing between staff within and outside of NCIC. 

The Named Nurse for Safeguarding Children will focus on the implementation and management of safeguarding systems and activity relating to:

  • Child Sexual Exploitation and contextual safeguarding
  • Responses to child deaths
  • Child Safeguarding Practice Reviews and the work of the Partnerships
  • Acting as an expert support to the Safeguarding Hub and the safeguarding administrators

Main duties of the job

General

Post holders will be expected to act in line with the Intercollegiate Document ‘Safeguarding Children and Young People; Roles and Competencies for Healthcare Staff’ https://www.rcn.org.uk/professional-development/publications/pub-007366 

  • Act as the safeguarding lead for children across the organisation
  • Promote best practice and emerging practice in Safeguarding Children work
  • Support all activities necessary to ensure that the organisation meets its responsibilities to safeguard/protect children, young people and unborn babies at risk, with the ability to challenge poor practice
  • Be responsible to and accountable within the managerial framework of NCIC, linking to the Designated Nurse within the ICB’s to ensure a link into the wider health economy

Standard Check: £21.50 + Administration cost of £5.90 = £27.40. Deducted from salary over a 4 month period or a one-off payment.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • • Current Registration on either Part 1 or Part 3 of the NMC register
  • • Degree or equivalent specialist post registration training in safeguarding
Desirable criteria
  • • Masters level qualification

Knowledge and experience

Essential criteria
  • • Post qualification experience and currently practising in safeguarding
  • • Advanced understanding of child-care legislation, information sharing, information governance, confidentiality, capacity and consent including guidance from professional bodies
  • • Know how to implement and audit the effectiveness of safeguarding services on an organisational level against current national guidelines and quality standards
Desirable criteria
  • Have an advanced knowledge of relevant national and international issues, policies and implications for practice

Skills and aptitudes

Essential criteria
  • • Able to give advice about safeguarding policy and legal frameworks
  • • Able to support colleagues in challenging views offered by other professionals, as appropriate
  • • Able to advise other agencies about the health management of child protection concerns
  • • Able to analyse and evaluate information and evidence to inform inter-agency decision-making across the organisation
  • • Able to participate in any statutory or locally required reviews of practice, leading internal management reviews as part of this
  • • Able to support others across the organisation to appropriately respond to learning reviews
  • • Able to develop a management plan for Fabricated and Induced Illness (FII) and to support colleagues involved in individual cases
  • • Able to establish and review safeguarding quality assurance measures and processes
  • • Able to undertake training needs analysis, and to teach and educate health service professionals
  • • Able to review, evaluate and update local guidance and policy in light of research findings

  • Able to advise and inform others about national and international issues and policies and the implications for practice
