Job overview

North Cumbria Integrated Trust is seeking to appoint a Trust Registrar in Urology on a fixed term contract for 12 months.

The Urology Department currently consists of 6 Consultant Urologists and there has been recent approval for the creation of a middle grade workforce to support with the ongoing investment in the service. This will consist of 1 Specialty Registrar, 2 Trust Registrar, 2 Trust CT Level Doctors, and 1 Advanced Care Practitioner. There are Physicians Associates that contribute to Urology and General Surgery across the surgical wards. The department is supported by 6 Urology Clinical Nurse Specialists, 2 Urology Nurses, 2 Cancer Care Co-ordinators, and 4 Healthcare Assistant across Cumberland Infirmary (CIC) and West Cumberland Hospital (WCH). The team have recently opened a Urology Investigations Unit at CIC which includes several state of the art treatment rooms, clinic space and dedicated office suites.

The trust doctors will have a named educational supervisor and training plans will be tailored to individual personal development needs. IT and library resources are available for trainees and support is available from GMC recognised trainers. Departmental directorate meetings take place every 6 weeks and active participation in audit is expected.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidates will have elective and emergency responsibilities in Urology surgery at NCIC. He/she will have regular elective duties within Urology surgery during the day from Monday to Fridays. Duties will include Urology clinics, diagnostic lists such as TP biopsies and cystoscopy, elective theatres, MDT meetings, ward rounds and PDT (personal development time). The doctor will undertake Urology on-call on a 1 in 6 rota which will include 0800-1700 resident on-call and 1700-0800 non-resident on call. Doctors will provide prospective cover for colleagues on approved annual and study leave.

Successful candidates will have responsibilities for the day-to-day care of all patients under the Urology Consultants at NCIC.  The department delivers Urological services at CIC with spoke services at WCH. The service delivers the full complement of general urological interventions including: Holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP), Thulium laser enucleation of the prostate (Thulep), Trans urethral resection of bladder tumour (TURBT), Nephrectomies, MRI Fusion TP Biopsies, ESWL, Urolift, Urodynamics, and Cystoscopies. The Urology department also works closely with other services at NCIC including the community bladder teams and Surgical Same Day Emergency Care Unit. The programme of training for each individual doctor will be flexible depending on his/her particular needs and stage of training.

Qualifications/Training

Essential criteria
  • MBBS MB ChB or equivalent registerable qualification
  • Full registration with the General Medical Council
  • Experience in managing Urology surgical patients and assisting in Urology surgery
Desirable criteria
  • MRCS, FRCS or FEBU
  • Experience from a Urology training programme (UK or overseas)

Skills and Aptitudes

Essential criteria
  • Ability to organise and prioritise workload and delegate responsibilities
  • Ability to maintain accurate and legible records
  • Understanding of NHS an Entity in relation to healthcare delivery
  • Demonstrate teaching experience
  • Ability to motivate and support multidisciplinary team

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Postgraduate surgical experience
  • Prior clinical experience in Urology surgery, minimum of 2 years of Urology experience at ST level
  • An understanding of evidence based medicine
  • ST level of experience, with minimum 2 years at Urology registrar level.
  • Able to demonstrate appropriate logbook experience in Urology Surgery
  • Interest in research and Involvement in Audit project
  • Able to demonstrate Continuing Professional Development
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of Urology Surgery in the UK
  • Comprehensive experience in Urology Surgery
  • Demonstrate improvement in care from Audit
  • Research qualification

  • To live or be able to move within a 15 mile (30-minute) radius of the Hub Hospital
  • Ability to travel
