Childrens Speech and Language Therapist

We are seeking a passionate, innovative and motivated Speech and Language Therapist to join our Childrens Speech and Language therapy team covering Carlisle and Eden, on a permanent basis.

Working as part of an integrated team with other specialist therapists, you will be required to provide assessment, advice and therapy to children and young people with a range of speech, language and communication needs, working with them, their families and supporting agencies.

You should have a degree or equivalent qualification in Speech and Language Therapy, be registered with HCPC, and have ongoing membership with the RCSLT. We are looking for an individual who demonstrates excellent interpersonal skills with a passion for delivering high standards of care in the heart of the community.

Our team provide an effective system of support and supervision, which may include 1:1, pair or group supervision, as well as participation with clinical networks, mentoring and other clinical learning opportunities.

On 28 November 2020, the new Disclosure and Barring Service filtering rules will come into effect.

The changes mean that:

The Trust is committed to safeguarding adults and children therefore if the post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (ROA) 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (as amended) the successful candidate(s) will be subject to a criminal records check with the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). The cost of the DBS must be met by the successful candidate(s) through salary deduction. DBS charges are as follows if applicable to the post:

Standard Check: £18 + Administration cost of £3.85 = £21.85. Deducted at £6.85 from 1st month salary and £5 deducted from salary over following 3 months.

  • Ability to manage own time, prioritise tasks and work independently to manage communication impairments using relevant policies and specialist knowledge to inform and make clinical decisions and judgements.
  • Ability to manage a caseload spread around a large rural area which involves driving long distances in possible adverse weather and road conditions to meet the needs of patients in a variety of settings
  • Ability to auditory, perceptual and observational skills together with specialist knowledge, underpinned by current evidence based practice to assess, make differential diagnosis, structure clear care plans and adopt practices to meet individual circumstances.
  • Ability to use analytical and judgement skills, involving information, which requires analysis, interpretation and comparison of a range of options, in order to diagnose, treat and formulate solutions to a range of communication disorders
  • Ability to use highly developed communication skills for communicating and understanding complex, sensitive and contentious information in a verbal or written form where they may be significant barriers to acceptance and understanding which need to be overcome, using negotiation, influencing, persuasive, empathic or reassurance skills e.g. negotiating with or motivating carers/relatives and patients; sensitive communication of condition related news, providing counselling and reassurance; managing disagreements or conflicts about client’s management; generating and negotiating solutions in complex and emotional situations; dealing with confrontational individuals and/or agencies.
  • Ability to sustain intense concentration on a frequent basis in all aspects of patient management where there is a requirement to monitor auditory visual and kinaesthetic aspects of communication, adapting and facilitating according to the perceived needs of the client e.g. specialist assessments requiring active participation
  • Ability to multi-task on a frequent basis, e.g. analyse data, compile reports with distractions and frequent interruptions.
  • Ability to deal with consequences of occasional exposure to the emotional consequences of working with distressing conditions.
  • Ability to work in unpleasant conditions on a frequent basis related to client e.g. dealing with secretions, verbal aggression, etc.
  • Ability to exert moderate physical effort frequently, for short periods during each day and work within uncomfortable situations on a regular basis for prolonged periods relating to client contact e.g. sitting on the floor, a small chair, kneeling, bending to lean over wheelchairs and beds and frequent requirement to drive to attend clients in their home environments.
  • Skills are required to make formal presentations.
