Job overview

Ward 33 is a 27 bedded acute surgical ward specialising in elective surgical care and a selection of trauma patients. We cover surgical specialities including colorectal, ENT, MaxFax, urology, orthopaedics, breast and gyne care. 

We are a fast paced ward, admitting between 8 - 15 patients daily. Staff must be prepared to provide high quality, safe care. 

Applicants must be prepared to work a full range of shifts covering a 24/7 service including weekends, long days and nights.

Main duties of the job

To care for patients post-operatively, monitoring vital signs, providing personal care and emotional support.

Working as part of a dedicated team to provide high quality patient care to both day case patients and patients with longer terms needs. 

We are committed to supporting our staff to develop themselves through advanced clinical skills and further training. 

Working for our organisation

We operate from three main hospitals-Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community healthcare premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre. 

FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services. 

WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses. 

All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Good general education Basic literacy, numeracy skills
Desirable criteria
  • ECDL or equivalent Willingness to undertake NVQ level 3 in care related area
  • Completed Trusts Support Worker
  • Development Programme

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Manual handling of patients, using lifting aids
  • Previous experience in a care environment

  • Ability to lead a team
