INTERNAL ONLY TO NORTH CUMBRIA INTEGRATED CARE NHS FOUNDATION TRUST (NCIC) EMPLOYEES ONLY
The person undertaking this post will be the lead professional in planning implementing and evaluating programmes of evidence based care relating to infant feeding practices within the Maternity and Children’s Department and Community facilities, working towards Government targets and recommendations. The post holder will promote best practice and develop evidence based infant feeding policies and guidelines and will be responsible for providing expert advice.
A high level of relevant expert knowledge and skills in relation to infant feeding is required which will be used to guide the Trust to achieve and maintain stage 3 of the Baby Friendly Initiative. There will also be a requirement to collate statistical information on infant feeding practices and develop, coordinate, facilitate and deliver teaching of educational programmes.
Main duties of the job
Clinical
Provide expert knowledge to colleagues, mothers and babies, giving advice and plans of care.
Demonstrate specialist skills regarding infant feeding practices and cascade to others.
Assess and evaluate care, audit and conclude results and implement changes to care and practices as appropriate.
Management
Implement change as required, displaying a positive approach.
Assess existing resources and advise on future cost effective resources.
Administration
Correlate statistics of breastfeeding rates and act on results according to Trust targets.
Establish guidelines and policies for infant feeding, ensuring all policies and service developments are impact assessed in respect of equality requirements.
Education
Provide advice to other units regarding baby friendly practices and assessment procedures.
Develop and teach programmes of education for staff, based on current evidence and meeting educational requirements of the baby friendly initiative.
Develop programmes of supervised clinical practices.
Educate GPs and Health Visitors as required.
Establish peer support training and coordinate implementation.
Teach parent craft and health promotion classes
Ensure compliance with mandatory training and PREP requirements.
Develop knowledge and educational opportunities within the spirit of life long learning.
Coordinate and plan staff education and peer support training.
Work with the University of Cumbria/Teaching Student Midwives

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Registered Midwife
- Evidence of post registration education
Desirable criteria
- International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) qualification or working towards.
- A relevant teaching and assessment in the workplace qualification.
