Job overview

The Children in Care and Youth Justice service are jointly commissioned by North East and North Cumbria Integrated Care Board and Lancashire and South Cumbria Integrated Care Board. The service operates a countywide model and is responsible for: 

-       Supporting the health needs of children and young people open to the Youth Justice Service and Criminal Justice Liaison and Diversion (CJL&D) service supporting vulnerable young people whilst in contact with the criminal justice system.

The post holder will be primarily responsible for supporting the health needs of children and young people open to the youth justice service. They will also be required to work with children and young people who are subject to a care order,  promoting seamless healthcare.

This post covers North Cumbria, the base will be confirmed with the successful candidate.

There will be an expectation that the post holder will also work from Youth Justice bases in Workington and Carlisle.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be expected to: 

Ø  Manage an individual clinical caseload

Ø  Be able to assess holistic health and wellbeing needs using a trauma informed approach

Ø  Develop and implement brief care package for common health needs- for example sleeping, lifestyle, sexual health, life skills, low mood/anxiety/emotional regulation/stress management and evaluate their effectiveness.

Ø  Coordinate health services across a range of providers, promoting seamless, continuous health care 

Ø  Help develop specialist pathways of health support to improve health outcomes for children within the criminal justice system.

Ø  Act as the health primary point of contact for young people, their families and professionals

Ø  Foster effective working relationships with partner agencies in order to promote interagency collaboration

Ø  Support the Named Nurse and Clinical Lead Manger in meeting their statutory and commissioned responsibilities. 

Ø  Support continuous service development.

Ø  Work autonomously as well as part of team

On 28 November 2020, the new Disclosure and Barring Service filtering rules will come into effect.

The changes mean that:                  

  • youth cautions, reprimands and final warnings will no longer be subject to automatic disclosure
  • the multiple conviction rule has been removed, meaning that if an individual has more than one conviction, regardless of offence type or time passed, each conviction will be considered against the remaining rules individually, rather than being automatically disclosed.

Please note the cost of the DBS check is increasing from 2nd December and the new cost will be

Standard DBS check £21.50, Enhanced DBS check £49.50 + any admin costs.

The cost of the DBS must be met by the successful candidate(s) through salary deduction. DBS charges are as follows if applicable to the post:

 

Standard Check: £18 + Administration cost of £3.85 = £21.85. Deducted at £6.85 from 1st month salary and £5 deducted from salary over following 3 months.

Enhanced Check: £38 + administration cost of £3.90 = £41.90. Deducted at £11.90 from 1st month salary and £10 deducted from salary over following 3 months.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • • Current Registered Nurse – RN/Child/LD/MH
Desirable criteria
  • • BSc (Hons) Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (SCPHN) in School Nursing
  • • Qualification in mental health
  • • Qualification in sexual Health
  • • Teaching and Assessing in Clinical Practice or equivalent

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • • Substantial experience of managing an extensive and complex caseload at a senior nurse level
  • • Experience of assessing health needs, formulating care plans
  • • An understanding of child development
  • • Understanding of the Mental Health Act/Mental Health Capacity
  • • Ability to provided targeted health support through brief health interventions
  • • Experience and understanding of working within safeguarding procedures and guidelines
  • • Understanding of the determinants of health and health inequalities.
  • • Knowledge of relevant legislation and guidance such as The Childrens Act (2004), Working Together to Safeguard Children (2023) and Statutory guidance Promoting the health and wellbeing of looked after children (2015) Mental Capacity and other relevant documents
Desirable criteria
  • • Experience working as a school nurse/ working with young people open to YJS/children in care
