When things are good, but could be better, we should feel able to speak confidently and raise a suggestion for improvement. Speak Up Safely Guardians provide that direction to support teams and individuals to speak up safely
We are looking for a Speak Up Safely Guardian to join our Speak up Safely Lead Guardian, you will be instrumental in implementing the Trust wide vision and action plan for the Speaking Up Safely national framework. You will support the delivery of a psychologically safe and inclusive speak up culture within the Trust
Experience as a Freedom to Speak Up/ Speaking Up Safely Guardian or of managing complex employee relations/complaints with a high level of knowledge about the Speak Up process is essential for this role
Building excellent relationships with employees and volunteers alike, you will have the ability to deal with potentially challenging, complex situations of a sensitive nature. You will be a confident communicator with excellent people skills, with the ability to show empathy, reassurance and appreciation to those raising concerns.
Main duties of the job
The Speak Up Safely Guardian will operate independently, impartially and objectively whilst working in partnership with the Trust. The Guardian will support colleagues to speak up when they feel that they are unable to do so by other routes, ensuring appropriate actions take place and challenging where necessary.
The role will assist in:
- Delivering the NHS Wales Speaking Up Safely Framework and its principles and support Welsh Ambulance Services University NHS Trust (WAST) with achieving Welsh Government compliance of the framework.
- Facilitating mechanisms for employees to raise concerns openly or anonymously, and with confidence.
- Implementation of the Trust wide strategic vision and long-term action place for Speaking Up Safely (SUS).
Drive activities that will support positive action towards creating a culture of speaking up safely and engage with key stakeholders to ensure they are included in this work.
The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Job Purpose
The Speaking Up Safely Guardian is a role supporting the delivery of the Trust’s Speak Up Safely (SUS) service supported by the wider team in achieving the following outcomes:
A positive culture of speaking up is instilled throughout the organisation with speaking up becoming business as usual.
All colleagues are aware of the process for speaking up and how to raise a concern. Supported appropriately when they speak up or support others who are speaking up.
That the Trust learns from concerns raised and improvements are made as a result.
Effectively align with the National Speak Up processes and best practice guidance.
Person specification
Qualifications and Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Master’s-level qualification in a relevant clinical or non-clinical discipline, or equivalent relevant experience.
- Evidence of Continuous Professional Development.
- The ability to evaluate and analyse highly complex and sensitive information.
- Understanding of raising concerns, including the barriers to raising concerns and strategies to potentially overcome them.
- Knowledge and understanding of the principles of Data Protection, confidentiality and good governance.
- The ability to work with a range of stakeholders, especially those responsible for patient safety and staff experience, to ensure that lessons are learnt, themes identified, and necessary changes are made.
Desirable criteria
- Mediation or counselling qualification.
- Relevant clinical or other qualification.
- Coaching qualification or equivalent demonstrable experience.
Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience of the Speak Up Safely agenda.
- Managing complex employee relations / complaints with a high level of knowledge about the Speak Up Safely process.
- Experience of presenting to groups of varying levels of seniority
- Developing and delivering learning interventions and reviewing cross organisational policies or initiatives
- Development of processes in alignment with policies and documentation.
- Experience of partnership building and relationship managing with groups of stakeholders and working in collaboration with senior leaders
- Experience and understanding of the effective use of mediation and managing highly confidential matters.
Desirable criteria
- Understanding of risk assessment and management in an organisational context.
- Experience of working in the NHS and understanding of national NHS initiatives.
- Understanding of employment processes.
