Are you an experienced NHS risk professional looking for a high-impact role in a supportive and innovative team? The Welsh Ambulance Services University NHS Trust is offering an exciting opportunity to join our award-winning Corporate Governance Team as Risk Manager (Band 7).
Working alongside the Assistant Director of Corporate Governance & Risk to lead the Trust’s enterprise risk management portfolio. This is a strategic role with national influence, offering you the opportunity to work closely with senior leaders across all directorates, embedding risk awareness and resilience into the heart of our services.
You will:
- Lead the implementation and embedding of a new electronic risk management system.
- Deliver high-quality education and training across the organisation.
- Provide expert advice, assurance, and support at all levels.
- Influence strategic decisions through intelligent, proactive risk reporting.
You will contribute to national governance networks, playing an important part in shaping good practice across NHS Wales and beyond.

Main duties of the job
You will:
Lead across the strategic environment, providing organisational leadership; promoting a positive culture of governance, compliance and risk awareness.
Work collaboratively across the Corporate Governance team, with operational teams and corporate directorates to lead risk management and assurance programmes.
Implement and maintain systems for risk management and take overall responsibility for preparing risk assessments.
Drive delivery of the assurance and risk agenda to achieve organisational objectives, delivery of safe and effective services, and compliance with legislation and standards.
Work closely with the Assistant Director of Corporate Governance & Risk to jointly lead on the development/implementation of a comprehensive risk management training programme, to ensure appropriate levels of competence around risk management exists and is embedded across all areas.
Develop and maintain strong, influential relationships with internal and external stakeholders to provide robust mechanisms of assurance that risk management is embedded and evidenced in WAST becoming a trusted strategic partner in NHS Wales and system influencer in the risk management arena.
Be a positive role model and have a broad knowledge and technical understanding of risk management and assurance, have excellent communication and organisation skills and the ability to work on their own initiative as well as part of a team.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Educated to Masters level or equivalent demonstrable level of experience, skills and knowledge in a relevant field.
- Evidence of relevant continuing managerial and professional development with appropriate post graduate/management qualifications.
- Specialist knowledge to post graduate diploma level of risk and assurance underpinned by theory and experience.
Desirable criteria
- Qualification in governance or risk management
- Training and facilitation experience or qualification.
- Member of relevant professional body (e.g. IRM).
- Leadership and/or management qualification
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Knowledge of corporate governance frameworks and evidence based assurance systems.
- Understanding of NHS risk management processes and practice including risk appetite/tolerance, board assurance framework
- Understanding of confidentiality based on data protection/GDPR and Caldicott principles
- Working knowledge of Datix or other risk information management systems.
- The postholder will require good keyboard skills to utilise IT software systems such as Microsoft Office 365 packages, Power BI, and Corporate Governances systems including but not limited to SharePoint administration
Experience
Essential criteria
- Significant experience of risk management/assurance within the NHS or large public sector organisation.
- Experience of risk management and assurance at Board and Executive level.
- Experience of delivering training programmes (in particular risk and/or assurance).
- Experience of writing formal reports for Committees.
- Experience of presenting reports to managers and clinical leaders.
- Excellent organisational, prioritisation and time management skills, and able to work to right deadlines and under pressure whilst managing own workload.
- Experience of developing procedures and guidance documents.
- Experience of working at a senior management level.
Desirable criteria
- Experience of working within a public sector/health service organisation.
- Evidence of working with audit teams within large organisations
- Understanding of risk management standards.
- Proven track record of project management.
- Lean Six Sigma or similar experience in improving process.
Skills
Essential criteria
- Ability to resolve complex queries using tact, diplomacy and negotiation skills.
- Be able to demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills to effectively convey complex information in reports, presentations or responding to queries.
- Be able to demonstrate excellent analytical and problem solving skills.
- Experience of managing others.
