Job overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen to recruit an enthusiastic Consultant to join the Acute Medicine Department at University Hospitals of Derby & Burton NHS Foundation Trust. The post will be based at Queens Hospital, Burton.
The Acute Medicine Business Unit is proud to offer high quality clinical care within flexible and sustainable job plan structures. We positively encourage part time working or job plans split with other specialties. A number of our team operate in this way, delivering DCC in other medical specialties, including stroke medicine and Cardiology.
Our vision is ‘to be a pinnacle for best practice and patient care across our emergency and urgent care pathways. We will integrate our services with the wider urgent care network to ensure patients receive the best care possible at the right time and in the right place'.
Our aim is to provide senior clinical decisions on patient care from the moment of arrival to discharge, with the minimum of unavoidable delay. We take pride in excellent patient care and that is why we are consistently scoring in high percentile for last three years running with SAMs audit.
Further details of Roles and Responsibilities whilst fulfilling AMU shifts, Standard Operating Procedures for AMU handover and Unit Operational Standards will be reviewed during Induction with the team for the successful candidate.
Main duties of the job
There is full 24-hr middle grade cover within the Department whilst also being able to offer a proactive approach to further training, development and education, including a well-equipped Centre for simulation-based training and a very supportive educational faculty - our educational supervisors have rated highly in GMC surveys.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
i. Management of patients on the Medical Admissions Unit and Medical Same Day Emergency Care Unit at University Hospitals of Derby & Burton NHS Foundation Trust, including patients referred by their GP, the Emergency Department or by other specialties. Provide Acute
Medicine in-reach to Adult patients in the Emergency Department.
ii. Responsibility for personal performance of clinical duties as agreed in their job plan,
allowing for all proper delegation to, and training of staff.
iii. Provision of cover for Consultant colleagues during reasonable periods of leave including care of patients and supervision of junior doctors and wherever possible any fixed commitments.
These are exciting times to join us at Acute Medicine business unit at Queens hospital Burton UHDB. We are planning to expand and extend our services, which include AMU, SSU, SDEC and Virtual ward.
Sub-specialty interest in any other medical specialty can be accommodated. Candidates can be accommodated for up to 2 PAs to pursue specialty of their interest. Interest in improving SDEC services and virtual ward like e,g Frailty services will be encouraged, and successful candidates will be given an extra PA to improve these services
Person specification
Clinical Experience
Essential criteria
- Evidence of independent clinical practice in Acute Medicine
- Clinical training & experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCT in General Internal Medicine
Desirable criteria
- Experience of Same Day Emergency Care
- Experience of monitoring patients remotely (virtual ward)
Teaching / Audit
Essential criteria
- Experience of & commitment to teaching undergraduates & postgraduates
- Experience of supervising Resident doctors
- Experience of & commitment to clinical audit
- Experience of Audit management
Desirable criteria
- Specific teaching qualification
- Experience of teaching basic clinical skills to under-graduates
- Attended a recognised teaching training course / accredited as educational supervisor
Qualifications
Essential criteria
- MRCP or equivalent
- Full GMC Registration with a licence to practice
- MBBS or equivalent
- Evidence of entry on GMC Specialist Register OR Be within 6 months of attaining CCT at time of interview and entry on GMC Specialist Register by date of commencement OR Evidence that the GMC is processing the Specialist Registration application (MUST be provided prior to interview)
Desirable criteria
- Postgraduate thesis – in any aspect of clinical medicine or education
- CCT in Acute Medicine
- CCT in General (Internal) Medicine
Management experience
Essential criteria
- Experience of audit and management.
Desirable criteria
- Completed a management course for consultants.
- Leadership experience
