Job overview

University Hospitals of Derby and Burton are pleased to offer this opportunity for a Specialist Grade Doctor in Anaesthetics with a Special Interest in Obstetric Anaesthesia. 


This is a permanent role and will be 40 hours per week (10 Programmed Activities (PA's)). The job plan is based on a Specialist Grade Contract (2021) with 9PA's for Direct Clinical Care and 1 PA for Supporting Professional Activities. 

We strongly believe the job plan needs to be sustainable and should enable the successful candidate a good work-life balance. There is no on-call associated with this post. 

Main duties of the job

All Specialist Doctors will be involved in providing a general clinical service to the Trust, providing clinical services to Derbyshire, East Staffordshire and surrounding areas, with colleagues and to be responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of patients at the hospitals and clinics at which you have duties and the proper functioning of the department.

You'll be responsible for the continuing care and treatment of patients in your charge and personal performance of clinical duties as agreed in your job plan, allowing for all proper delegation to and training of your staff, the teaching of staff in training, and the multidisciplinary team.  

You'll be maintaining flexible arrangements for emergency cover and a provision of cover for colleagues during reasonable periods of leave including the care of patients and supervision of resident doctors.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The job plan will be reviewed annually at the formal job plan review meeting; though it can be adapted and changed to meet service needs with appropriate notice. The job plan will be an agreement that sets out the post holder’s duties, responsibilities and objectives for the coming year.  It will cover all aspects of professional practice including clinical work, teaching, research, education and managerial responsibilities.  In addition, it will include personal objectives, including details of their link to wider service objectives, and details of the support required by the post holder to fulfil the job plan and achieve the objectives.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • Full registration with GMC and Licence to Practise at time of application
  • FRCA or equivalent higher qualification
Desirable criteria
  • Additional higher medical/scientific degree relevant to the speciality
  • Membership examination with the relevant UK Royal College

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Completed a minimum of 12 years full time postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part-time or flexible basis) - Candidates must meet this eligibility for the grade as per National Terms and Conditions.
  • A minimum of 6 years clinical experience within the specialty - Candidates must meet this eligibility for the grade as per National Terms and Conditions
  • Experience at Specialty Registrar and/or Specialty Doctor grade in the specialty
  • Up to date clinical knowledge in the relevant specialty and evidence of an understanding of its application
Desirable criteria
  • Minimum 1 year NHS experience

Teaching Experience, Clinical Audit and Research

Essential criteria
  • Evidence and experience of supervising and teaching resident doctors and medical students
  • Ability to and experience of teaching clinical skills
  • Evidence and ability to assess and apply evidence-based research into every day clinical practice
  • Experience of and commitment to clinical audit and/or Quality Improvement Projects (QIP)
  • Evidence of relevant academic and research achievements relevant to the specialty
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of teaching basic clinical skills to under-graduates
  • Specific teaching qualification
  • Attended a recognised teaching training course

Language and Communication Skills

  • Experience of formal presentations
