Job overview

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Clinical Fellow to join the Breast Team at UHDB as a Senior Oncoplastic Clinical Fellow.  This is an appointment to cover a 12-month period commencing 1st April 2026.

Applicants should have a minimum of two years’ experience in Surgery (not including Foundation Years) of which 6 months must be Breast Surgery.  Possession of the MBBS, plus full GMC registration with Licence to Practise at the time of application is essential.

Main duties of the job

The elective work involves daily ward rounds, time-tabled sessions for theatre and out-patient clinics and multidisciplinary team meetings. Whilst it is not yet a recognised training post, this post is well supervised and there are opportunities to learn and develop skills.

The post will primarily cover services at Queen's Hospital, Burton with some additional responsibilities at Royal Derby Hospital.

There is no on-call commitment with this post.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • An interest in further developing Oncoplastic Breast Surgery
  • Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of Breast Service
  • To share with colleagues responsibility for the day-to-day running of the Breast Service
  • Teaching and training of junior staff, medical student
  • To actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and audit
  • To have responsibility for ensuring active participation in continuing medical education (CME)

Person specification

Qualifications and Eligibility

Essential criteria
  • MBBS / MBChB or equivalent
  • MRCS or equivalent higher qualification
  • Life Support Qualifications - Advanced Life Support
  • Full GMC Registration with a license to practice at time of application
Desirable criteria
  • Additional higher medical/scientific degree relevant to the specialty

Clinical Knowledge and Skills

Essential criteria
  • Completed at least four years' full-time postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part-time or flexible basis). At least six months must be in Breast Surgery
  • Relevant specialty clinical knowledge
  • Minimum 6 months NHS experience
  • Up to date clinical knowledge in the relevant specialty & evidence of an understanding of its application
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in Oncoplastic Breast Surgery

Teaching Experience

Essential criteria
  • Evidence & experience of supervising and teaching resident doctors and medical students
  • Ability to & experience of teaching clinical skills
Desirable criteria
  • Any teaching courses or qualifications

Audit/Research Experience

Essential criteria
  • Evidence and ability to assess & apply evidence-based research into every day clinical practice
  • Experience of formal presentations
