Job overview

An opportunity has arisen within the busy Surgical Day Case department at Queens Hospital Burton. The unit provides an elective day care service for a variety of surgery including Ophthalmic, General, Orthopaedic, Vascular, Dermatology, ENT, Urology, Breast and Gynaecology. In addition, a flexible cystoscopy service and rheumatology clinics are supported  

This is a forward thinking unit with excellent nursing representation and is an exciting opportunity for the right candidate to provide leadership, management and co-ordinate a team of enthusiastic, highly skilled nursing individuals. The successful candidate will need to lead the ward by example whilst dealing quickly and efficiently with any issues that arise. The right candidate will provide direction to the current focus on maximising patient throughput, efficiency and patient care delivery whilst moving the unit forward into the future 

Expert knowledge of Day Case Surgery is an essential, alongside understanding the current NHS focus on productivity whilst maintaining excellent patient care. The ideal candidate should have experience in a day case setting as a Band 6.

 

Main duties of the job

  • Overall management of the nursing team within the department including absence, performance management and dealing with any HR issues
  • Budget management
  • Rostering
  • Staff development and education
  • Service Improvement
  • Provide Surgical Day Case expertise
  • Networking across UHDB to other Surgical Day Case Units, sharing best practice, policys and practices 
  • Provide leadership and knowledge
  • To acknowledge and learn from patient feedback and improve experience

Education, Training and Qualifications CPD Requirements

Essential criteria
  • NMC Registration
  • To be able to demonstrate significant post registration experience
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working with patients suffering from dementia
  • Evidence of degree / working towards higher degree or equivalent experience

Experience & Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrable management and leadership skills
  • Demonstrable experience in mentoring, supporting, coaching and developing staff
  • Understanding of the infection control standards
Desirable criteria
  • Day Case module or relevant education experience
  • Day Case knowledge and experience
  • Evidence of teaching/nurturing

Skills and Ability

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of Surgical Day Surgery experience
  • To be able to demonstrate good decision making skills
  • To be able to demonstrate good work/time management skills
  • To be able to demonstrate experience in running a department/ward
Desirable criteria
  • To have managed and/or have experience of working within a Day Case Unit or surgcial ward
  • To be able to work across division during unit cover and deputising for matron
