Job overview

This is an amazing opportunity to take advantage of an exciting post as Senior Clinical Fellow in Paediatrics at Queens Hospital in Burton on Trent, Staffordshire for 12 months. All posts come with the opportunity and supervision to develop an interest within the paediatric department and are ideally suited to a candidate who is ready to take on middle grade decision making or a post CCT candidate to develop and complete a project that will help make them more competitive in the Consultant Job Market.

This is a full shift rota and includes out-of-hours on-call cover.

This post is available to commence as soon as possible.

Main duties of the job

This is a 12 month fixed term post for University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust based at Queen’s Hospital, Burton. It includes a requirement to work across other UHDB sites should the need arise

Any applicant unable for personal reasons to work full time will be eligible to be considered for the post; if such a person is appointed; modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Associate Director, but the out of hours commitment is fixed.

Queens Hospital Burton is part of University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust which merged with Royal Derby Hospital and Queens Hospital Burton in July 2018. Burton was authorised as a Foundation Trust on 1st November 2008. NHS foundation trusts are a fundamental part of the current NHS reform programme. They reflect the move from a centrally managed service to one that is managed locally and so more responsive to patients. We provide hospital-based services from four main sites -

Queens Hospital, Burton-Upon-Trent - acute hospital services, including an Emergency Department the Treatment Centre, on the Queens site - a dedicated centre for day case surgery and treatments. Samuel Johnson Community Hospital, Lichfield - local services, including a midwife-led maternity unit.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  •      Provision of a comprehensive general paediatric service to UHDB Hospitals Foundation Trust & surrounding areas and assisting the Paediatric Consultants responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis & treatment of illness, & the proper functioning of the department.
  • Responsibility for the continuing care & treatment of patients in your charge & personal performance of clinical duties as agreed in your job plan.
  • Responsibility to carry out any work related to and reasonably incidental to the duties set out in their Job Plan e.g. the keeping of records and the provision of reports, the proper delegation of tasks, maintaining skills and knowledge.
  • Responsibility to be flexible and co-operate with reasonable requests to cover colleagues leave and absences where they are safe and competent and where it is practicable to do so.
  • Participation in the clinical governance arrangements of the Trust & specifically within the Directorate including clinical audit, & research
  • Responsibility for implementing the Infection Control Policies as determined by University Hospitals Derby & Burton NHS NHS Foundation Trust
  • Responsible for compliance with personal continuing medical education requirements with the support of the Trust 
  • Responsible for maintaining awareness of professional guidelines such as ‘Duties of a Doctor' & 'GMC Performance Procedures’ & acting in accordance with them
  •       An exceptional requirement to undertake additional duties for limited periods within the geographical areas specified above or undertake duties at other hospitals in the event of a major disaster or incident

  

 

 

 

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MBBS/MhChB OR equivalent
  • Full GMC Registration
  • APLS Provider
  • Training in Child Protection/ Safeguarding (Min Level 3)
Desirable criteria
  • APLS instructor
  • Full RCPCH membership
  • ATLS/ETC provider

Clinical Experience

Essential criteria
  • A minimum of 6 years full-time (or part time equivalent) post Foundation experience to enable working on the senior registrar rota (ST6+)
  • Experience in making clinical decisions and ability to prioritise clinical need
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working in a Childrens Emergency Department
  • Understands key indicators influencing emergency care

Clinical Knowledge and Skills Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience in clinical decision making and managing risk

Teaching and Audit

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of interest and experience of teaching junior doctors and medical students
  • Evidence of active participation in Audit
  • Demonstrates understanding of the principles of research
Desirable criteria
  • Qualification in medical education
