Job overview
The North Derbyshire Screening Centre & Endoscopy Unit is delighted to invite applicants to apply for an exciting dual role at Chesterfield Royal Hospital.
The role will be split between the closely working teams of Endoscopy and Bowel Cancer Screening, working 22.5 hours per week at Band 6 as Specialist Screening Practitioner and 15 hours per week at Band 5 as Endoscopy Nurse.
Recent experience in Endoscopy is essential, and the applicant must hold the Screening Specialist Practitioner qualification attained from an accredited university. In both roles the nurse acts as the patents advocate, supporting them and their carers to navigate and make informed choices through all stages of the screening or endoscopy process. You will pre-assess our patients for colonoscopy, screening and all endoscopy procedures and be able to discuss findings pertinent to the diagnosis found at the Endoscopy procedure.
These are quality assured services with mandatory service provision specifications and KPI’s.
For the SSP role, there is a full mandatory training programme that must be completed in order to become an SSP, this includes:
- Participating in and passing the SSP training module at university (40 credits at level 6)
- The Advanced Communication Skills course – to assist in complex decision making and dealing with sensitive issues.
- NHSdigital SSP course – for access to the BCSP computer system
Main duties of the job
The SSP will undertake Clinic to pre-assess and prepare safely, Bowel Cancer Screening Patient's suitability for diagnostic procedures, support patients during BCSP procedures, interpret and give results, support patients during cancer diagnosis and attend Multi-disciplinary meetings and be involved in inclusive health promotion activities with our local Public Health services to encourage access to our service by all sections of our society.
The Endoscopy Nurse will undertake safe admission of patients to the Endoscopy Unit, Participate in supporting Endoscopist and patient during Endoscopic procedures such as Colonoscopy, Gastroscopy and bronchoscopy and ERCP, Recover and discharge patient safely. In addition will be nurse in charge and be on an on-call for bleeds on a rostered basis.
You will have evidence of continued professional development and the requirement to develop the knowledge and skills required for this post.
For the role as Endoscopy staff nurse you will take part in the jet’s clinical competencies and work to JAG (Joint Advisory Group) standards. You will work collaboratively with the Endoscopy Unit and The Programme Hub to co-ordinate and provide care from this Screening Centre. Post holders are expected to adhere to and review clinical practice, audit of the service and utilise research to inform practice.
You will have excellent oral and written skills together with high standards of clinical care and be able to work autonomously.

Qualifications & Training
Essential criteria
- 1st level nurse (RGN)
- Qualified accredited Specialist Screening Practitioner
- Completed and attained the Specialist Bowel Cancer Screening Practitioner Degree module at either Liverpool John Moore's or Plymouth University
- Current NMC registration
Desirable criteria
- Diploma or 1st level degree
- Completed the bowel cancer screening programme (BCSP) specialist screening practitioner education module at degree level
- Trained in Endoscopy Nursing Skills
Experience
Essential criteria
- Knowledge of bowel cancer screening & Endoscopy programmes
- Experience at band 5 to include: Evidence of ability to mentor, Ability to manage the clinical area or ward efficiently and effectively, Ability to convey sensitive information in an empathetic manner to patients, relative/carers and staff
Desirable criteria
- Experience working at band 6
- Endoscopy experience as a band 5 Endoscopy Nurse
- Transferrable skills including Cannulation & Venepuncture
