Highly Specialist Cardiac Physiologist - Echo

Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Cardio-Respiratory Department at Chesterfield Royal Hospital for a Band 7 Highly Specialised Cardiac Physiologist (Echocardiography). The role will predominantly be specialised in echocardiography and candidates should possess BSE accreditation. Candidates wishing to maintain their skills in other cardiac physiology services is encouraged.

Increasing opportunities are also available to collaborate with specialist services such as paediatrics and cardio-oncology. The service utilises GE ultrasound machines with a new echo reporting system (GE-CCW/EchoPac).

The successful candidate will be expected to work between the main department at Chesterfield Royal Hospital and the brand new, purpose-built local Community Diagnostic Centre at Walton Hospital. 

The department is soon to commence its journey in becoming IQUIPS accredited, and we would be delighted for a forward-thinking physiologist to join our team and play a key role in driving both this and clinical developments forwards.

Main duties of the job

  • To provide education and training for Physiologists and other healthcare professionals within echocardiography
  • To have designated responsibilities within the echo department to support the echo team
  • To participate in CPD activities to maintain own competencies and understand changes in national guidance/training requirements
  • To review and authorise reports from non BSE accredited Physiologists giving appropriate feedback
  • To be a senior member of the Cardio-Respiratory team as a whole by working together, ensuring the delivery of high quality services to our patients
  • Work closely with the clinical service manager to deliver on local and national objectives

Chesterfield Royal Hospital is located in Calow, Chesterfield, which is situated on a green field site on the edge of the Peak District National Park. It is home to the Crooked Spire and is also close to Sheffield, Derby and Nottingham, thus offering numerous choices for recreational activities and lifestyles.

Chesterfield Royal Hospital was officially opened by the queen in 1985 and since then it has continued to expand and modernise, currently holding approximately 500 beds. We provide acute in-patient and out-patient care for Chesterfield and the surrounding rural area of North Derbyshire, serving a population of approximately 400,000 people.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • BSE accreditation
  • Formal training in cardiac investigations resulting in a BSc in Clinical Physiology/BSc Healthcare Science or equivalent
  • Holds a current ILS/ALS certificate
Desirable criteria
  • Acknowledged teaching qualification
  • Master’s degree or equivalent

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Developed knowledge in a wide range of cardiac diagnostics
  • Demonstrates continuing professional development
  • Experience in supervising junior team members and medical colleagues
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in Paediatric echocardiography
  • Teaching experience
  • BSE assessor (or desire to become one)

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Performs high quality scans and in-depth reports to BSE standards
  • Ability to analyse and interpret ECG/ ambulatory ECG when required, providing accurate documentation and factual reports to assist with clinical diagnosis when necessary
  • Can undertake physiologist led exercise tolerance testing when required, following established national and local policies/procedures. Interprets test results and provides an accurate factual report when the service requires
  • Ability, knowledge and experience to make complex decisions and take appropriate action e.g. referring patients appropriately in an acute situation to an appropriate physician
  • Requires highly developed physical skills where a high degree of precision and hand eye coordination is essential
  • Possesses highly developed sensory skills and co-ordination essential for the accurate use of complex diagnostic equipment
  • The role requires the individual to take care of their own health and safety at work and to discuss with management any issues that may arise due to the work involved to assure no permanent muscular skeletal issues in the future
