Job overview

This role will enable a core/F3 equivalent level doctor to gain experience as part of our Surgical team at Chesterfield Royal Hospital.  

It has been specifically designed for training level medics who would like to gain more General Surgery experience and consolidate their knowledge, skills and confidence prior to moving on to the next stage of their career, and for those looking to gain wider experience of the NHS. This would be suitable for someone who has some surgical experience at Foundation or SHO level.

The minimum skill requirement, including 2 years of post graduate experience, is outlined in the attached person specification.

Some aspects of the role can be bespoke to the individual needs of the post-holder and tailored to take into account previous relevant experience, or achievement of requirements for application to specialty training.

Out of hours duties will be as part of a full shift system where participants will contribute to a working pattern including weekends, nights, twilights and longs days, subject to verification of the rota the successful candidate will be allocated to.

The post will start from 06 August 2025, fixed term for 12 months. Candidates must be able to commence from the beginning of August.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or equivalent.
  • GMC registered with license to practise
Desirable criteria
  • ALS/ATLS provider certification
  • APLS/EPLS provider certification
  • MRCS

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Minimum of 2 years post-graduate clinical experience (completion of Foundation competencies or equivalent).
Desirable criteria
  • Teaching delivery experience (any modality)
  • Level 1 Ultrasound
  • Evidence of completing audit / quality improvement project and having implanted change to practice

Skills and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of reflective practice.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with clinicians, administrative staff, and patients.
  • Capacity to apply sound clinical knowledge relevant to the job.
  • Experience in making clinical decisions and managing risk.
  • Ability to prioritise clinical need.
  • Shows aptitude for practical skills required in the job.
Desirable criteria
  • Surgical log-book.
  • Evidence of relevant academic and research achievements relevant to General Surgery.
