Job overview
Do you have a passion for clinical education and developing your teaching skills? Are you interested in influencing the development of our new doctors? A 6 month fixed term opportunity has arisen for a Clinical Educator (AFC: Band 6) in Old Age Psychiatry at Kingsway site.
The Derby Psychiatry Teaching Unit (PTU) provides clinical placements to 4th year medical students from the University of Nottingham who are completing their psychiatry module in Derby.
Main duties of the job
Our ethos is to provide excellence, compassion and experiential learning in Medical Education. To do this we have developed a number of innovative interactive teaching approaches to help engage students and better develop their skills in working with people experiencing mental ill health.
You will be directly involved in teaching Undergraduate Medical students all aspects of Old Age Psychiatry.
There is a particular emphasis in utilising Lived Experience in medical education and part of your role will be to participate in this.
We are currently seeking someone skilled and experienced to cover long term sickness, however there may be a possibility that the post could become permanent in the future. As such, we are seeking mental health nurses with minimum of 3 years’ post registration experience. Applicants must be enthusiastic, motivated and interested in developing face to face ‘bedside’ teaching with service receivers and carers, ensuring that respect and consideration for the needs of both students and service receivers is prioritised.
The role may involve pastoral support for students, as they often experience triggering, due to the sensitive nature of the subject matter discussed, or witnessing distressing incidents.

2. Job Summary |
|
The main purpose of the role is to:
· Collaborate with patients and carers, clinical areas and the Psychiatry Teaching Unit (PTU) to develop and facilitate medical student training within clinical environments
· Participate in the delivery of the Lived Experience programme, including Expert Patient sessions with students as well as Lived Experience Facilitators in the delivery of formal teaching.
· Develop and facilitate ‘bed-side’ teaching opportunities to enable students to practice clinical skills, including conducting mental state examinations, history taking, risk assessment, and interventions utilised in the support and treatment of mental health illnesses within the clinical environment.
· Participate (after training) in the delivery of multi-media clinical teaching material
· Induct students onto the ward and other clinical areas. Facilitate medical student involvement in clinical reviews with patient and carers in care teams
· Provide support, supervision and mentorship to the medical students
· Contribute to the preparation and coordination of timetables for individual medical students.
Evaluate effectiveness of teaching through reviewing feedback from students, staff, patients and carers, audits, research.
· Participate in developing improvements plans to the quality of teaching.
· Work with simulated patients/ professional role players to develop and provide alternative experiential learning opportunities.
· Represent the clinical teaching team at appropriate Trust and external meetings.

3. Key result areas (main duties/responsibilities) |
|
The post holder will work across clinical areas to maintain up-to-date knowledge and awareness of clinical developments in mental health.
They will facilitate the input of users and carers in medical eduaction both in being part of delivering this but also in devloping the curriculum.
They will be responsible for fostering a learning culture within clinical areas that promotes inclusion, enables independence, and enhances the autonomy of the service user. They will be proactive in initiating and sustaining a respectful and consistent relationship with service users, carers and other professionals in advancing the cause of delivering high quality medical student education.
The post holder will provide multidisciplinary input to the central teaching modules and would work with the Clinical Teaching Fellows to improve the evaluation and feedback provided to medical students.
Psychiatry can be an emotionally challenging placement for students. As such, the post holder will maintain an awareness of support available, how to access this, and be able to facilitate and support students who may need to access ongoing support. They will ensure the deanery is aware of concerns.
In collaboration with the Medical School, the post holder will address concerns relating to students attitudes, behaviour, including attendance, and report concerns to the medical school
As a registered practitioner they are personally accountable for their professional practice and have a legal/professional responsibility to service users, colleagues, employers and self and to follow guidelines for professional practice as per NMC.

- 1. NMC registered Code Sub Part 1 RN 3 Mental Health Nursing
- 2. Educated to Degree Level or evidence of equivalent experience in relevant clinical area
- 6. Recent experience of working with Older Age service users and carers who have experienced of mental ill health.

- 3. Teaching qualification: PGCE, ENB 997/8, NVQ Assessor, CG 730, clinical mentorship or equivalent
