The post holder will provide supervisory support to a small but dedicated team whilst being flexible to accommodate the changing requirements of the services we support
Main duties of the job
The role undertakes portering duties to support services within Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, working predominantly between two key sites Kingsway Hospital and The Radbourne Unit which is based within the Royal Derby Hospital grounds, working both internally and externally at both localities.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
1. To discuss with the team on a daily basis the work schedule and assign ad hoc tasks to individuals as necessary prioritizing where required
2. Participate with the induction for new starters and volunteers to include equipment training and health & safety awareness, keeping the portering training manual updated as necessary
3. To assist the Portering Manager in the recruitment of other portering staff keeping updated with the relevant recruitment and selection training
4. The post room provides a mail sorting facility for the Kingsway Site and Radbourne Unit, and associated properties and services within the DHCFT.
5. On receipt of royal mail sort and deliver registered and recorded mail in accordance with the departmental operation procedures.
6. Report to the Portering Manager when waste containers require exchange to include glass and furniture.
7. Ensure staffing rotas are covered to include weekends, bank holidays and periods of sickness absence and annual leave
8. To assist the Portering Manager in carrying out and updating all risk assessments associated with tasks carried out within the portering department.
9. To liaise with the Domestic Manager when utilizing the domestic bank staff for portering cover.
10. To report and monitor through the EFM helpdesk all associated repairs for any portering equipment and vehicles
11. On a daily basis check the Portering Department help desk email account and respond appropriately, responding to requests and prioritizing where necessary, liaise with the Logistics and Portering Manager if required.
12. To coordinate all requests for removals ensuring all risks are evaluated prior to commencement following health and safety procedures, allocate to staff and assist where necessary
13. To follow all procedures and work schedules relating to the mail delivery service and other portering duties.
14. To ensure that circulars, periodicals and staff magazines are distributed as required.
15. To deliver all goods received to the appropriate areas, ensuring that the operational procedures for delivery are followed and signatures are obtained.
16. To ensure that the post room area is kept clean, safe and secure.
17. To ensure any stationery stocks held within the post room are delivered as necessary and follow all defined stock handling procedures and liaise with admin for recharges and reordering for mattresses .
18. Collect and transport Pathology specimens to relevant departments in accordance with the timed schedules and any urgent requests are responded to in a timely manner
19. To provide a daily collection service of soiled laundry and refuse.
20. Deliver Pharmacy goods in accordance with the receipt control signatory paperwork.
21. To provide a weekly glass collection from wards and departments within Kingsway and the Radbourne Unit.
22. To provide a secure collection service for confidential waste.
23. To exchange full clinical waste containers ensuring that waste is never allowed to accumulate, providing empty containers whenever the need arises outside the normal scheduled collections.
24. To exercise vigilance and efficiency in and around the main hospital sites to ensure all areas are free from empty stillages, tote boxes and general rubbish.
25. To ensure that voice mail messages to the department are accurately actioned and guidance obtained where necessary.
26. To ensure that staff complete the vehicle daily check sheets prior to use , any defects are reported immediately using the EFM helpdesk or cascaded higher where necessary
27. To maintain stocks levels of oxygen cylinders and liaise with the stores for deliveries, coordinate requests from wards for replacement oxygen cylinders as required using the receipting delivery form.
28. To liaise with the training department to ascertain the requirements for room configurations for meetings, training and presentations as requested, advising and using analytical skills when carrying out the task
29. On a daily basis undertake the collection and delivery of the Mental Health Act documents safely and securely using the tagged bags provided
30. Driving electric vehicles and a van to assist with removals forms a daily part of the role so a valid driving licence is required for this post.
31. To attend any training courses identified as relevant to the post or in an effort to assist personal development.
32. Undertake any other appropriate duties as may be delegated from time to time by the Portering Manager and the Head of Facilities.
33. To comply with all Trust Policies, procedures and initiatives.

The postholder will have access to vulnerable people in the course of their normal duties and as such this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
