Job overview
We have a superb opportunity for highly motivated, enthusiastic Speech and Language Therapist to join the Adult Neurodevelopmental Service (Learning Disabilities) covering the south Derbyshire geographical area.
We are a small, friendly and extremely supportive team of Speech and Language Therapists.
We would love to hear from candidates both who already work within this clinical area and candidates who have not previously worked with this client group and would like to develop their skills.
Working in the community includes a lot of autonomy, including managing your own diary, with every day feeling varied and exciting!
We have the opportunity to work with small caseloads, seeing our patients frequently and feeling like we make a difference.

Main duties of the job
If you are a dedicated and enthusiastic Speech and Language Therapist, who is keen to learn, we can support you to tailor your current clinical skills to working in this new role.
You will have access to regular caseload and clinical supervision, plus a meaningful annual appraisal that supports you to plan and achieve goals.
The people that we support are individuals and our approach is always person centred.
Our focus is to provide high quality assessment and intervention to support people (and those closest to them) to communicate as effectively as possible.
Swallowing assessments and advice are delivered with a view to reduce negative health outcomes associated with dysphagia, promote choice and facilitate good quality of life.
You will be working as part of a multi-disciplinary team alongside Psychologists, Occupational Therapists, Nurses, Physiotherapists, Therapy Assistants, to name a few!

The successful candidate:
- Should be able to work well independently and as part of a team. You should have specialist knowledge and skills in a range of relevant clinical areas. Clinical skills that have been developed whilst working with other client groups will be transferrable to this setting and we welcome applications from anyone who is keen to learn and adapt existing skills to support assessments and treatment for people with a learning disability.
- Should have dysphagia experience or be keen to learn to provide dysphagia assessment intervention with this client group.
- Will need to have means of transport to cover the different community localities in south Derbyshire area, including locations such as Derby city, Amber Valley and Swadlincote.
- Will carry out comprehensive communication and dysphagia assessments of clients and their environments using a range of observational and formal tools, in order to provide appropriate and effective intervention
- Will inform others and facilitate a holistic approach
- Will evaluate and measure outcomes
- Will provide person-centred goal directed interventions (through one to one, group, and Consultancy Model).
- Will work in collaboration within the team around a client including family, carers and colleagues from a range of professions and agencies health, education, social services, and the voluntary sector.
- Will contribute to the development of the services provided by SLT.
- Will enable others, including Speech and Language Therapy Assistants, through formal, informal training and support to meet the communication and dysphagia needs of clients.
- Will deputise for the Band 7 SLT in their absence.

Attainments and Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Recognised Speech and Language Therapy Degree Qualification
- Health Care Professions Council Registration
- Registered Member of Royal College of Speech & Language Therapists.
Desirable criteria
- Completion of post graduate dysphagia training course
Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience of working as a Speech and Language Therapist
Desirable criteria
- Experience of working in a registered SLT post with people with learning disabilities
- Experience of using person-centred thinking approaches in clinical practice
