Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Clinical Fellow to join our friendly, enthusiastic Anaesthetic team at University Hospitals Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust (UHDB), based at the Royal Derby Hospital site.

These are fixed term posts and any candidate who wishes to work less than full time will be considered and supported, taking into account service needs. 

Main duties of the job

This post will provide you with the opportunity to gain further clinical anaesthetic experience, whilst explaining your knowledge and capabilities in selected clinical and non-clinical domains.

On call duties will be on a 2-tier obstetric anaesthetic rota, working within a team of trainees, specialty and specialist anaesthetists, under the leadership of the Consultant on call.

The Successful applicant will also participate in the provision of anaesthesia to patients across a range of surgical specialties based upon clinical experience and educational needs.

Although not a formal training post and not accredited by Health Education West/East Midlands, we believe we can offer a range of opportunities to progress your career.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Supported time for non-clinical activities and CPD will be provided, approximately 44 days per year (averaging 1 day per clinical week), allocated around on call shifts and with agreement of the rota coordinator. CPD time can be used for educational goals, including post graduate exam preparation, and activities relating to the focus of their chosen fellowship.

A log of activities performed during CPD time should be kept for appraisal purposes. Applicants are encouraged to keep a log of non-clinical and clinical activity throughout their fellowship. Appraisal will be performed prior to the end of the fellowship post.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MBBS/MBChB or equivalent
  • Life Support Qualifications ALS
  • Full GMC Registration with a license to practice at time of application
Desirable criteria
  • Completion of primary FRCA
  • Obstetric emergency courses/qualifications

Experience

Essential criteria
  • A minimum 2 years' experience working in anaesthesia (1 year of which within the NHS)
  • Completed both the initial assessment of competence (IAC) and initial assessment of Obstetric competence (IAOC)
Desirable criteria
  • Previous experience of on call obstetric work

Audit, and quality improvement experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of audit
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of closing the audit loop
  • Completed quality improvement projects

Teaching Experience

Essential criteria
  • Evidence & experience of supervising and teaching resident doctors and medical students
  • Ability to & experience of teaching clinical skills
Desirable criteria
  • Any teaching courses or qualifications
