The candidate would join a team of 12 consultants, 7 speciality doctors, 1 teaching fellow, 1 ACP, and 4 speciality registrars,  offering a full range of services. The Ophthalmology team are a friendly, dedicated and forward-thinking team within the University Hospitals of Derby and Burton.

 

Main duties of the job

You will be able to participate in departmental teaching and study opportunities and will be able to attend recognised courses where they do not compromise service delivery.

The unit is supported by a full Orthoptic department and a highly trained nursing team, providing a glaucoma service, RMD service and one-stop cataract assessment.  The Ophthalmology Department is based in the KTC at Derby for both outpatients and day case procedures.  We also provide a range of consultant outreach services in local community settings.

Qualifications & Eligibility

Essential criteria
  • MBBS / MBChB or equivalent
  • FRCOphth or equivalent higher qualification
  • Life Support Qualification
  • Full GMC Registration with a license to practice at time of application
  • GMC Specialist Register for Ophthalmology Specialty OR within 6 months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at time of interview OR If applying for Full GMC Registration & Licence to Practice simultaneously with a CESR application, supporting documentary evidence must be provided at interview, to confirm an application has been submitted & is under consideration by the GMC.
  • Glaucoma fellowship in special interest.
Desirable criteria
  • Additional higher medical/scientific degree relevant to the specialty
  • Training Qualification

Clinical Knowledge & Skills

Essential criteria
  • Proven clinical experience of the specialty, minimum of 6 years, 3 years of which should be at specialty registrar level.ality, minimum of 6 years, 3 years of which should be at speciality registrar level
  • Wide experience of managing glaucoma patients
  • Evidence of independent clinical practice
  • Relevant specialty clinical knowledge
Desirable criteria
  • 1 year NHS experience
  • Interest in an area of Ophthalmology complimentary to existing consultants
  • Ability to carry out high volume cataract surgery

Management and admin experience

Desirable criteria
  • Attended a management/leadership course
  • Evidence of relevant academic and research achievements relevant to the specialty

Teaching, Research & Audit

Essential criteria
  • Evidence & experience of supervising and teaching resident doctors and medical students
  • Ability to & experience of teaching clinical skills
  • Experience of & commitment to clinical audit and/or Quality Improvement Projects (QIP)
  • Evidence and ability to assess & apply evidence-based research into every day clinical practice
  • Evidence of relevant academic and research achievements relevant to the specialty
